I'm currently employed at pretty well-known Furniture store In NJ. Business use to Be great, but over the past year Sales Have been dropping steadily. (Our prices our low and Our Customer service goes above and beyond expectation) Our biggest problem seems to be the amount of customers Coming to our locations. We Have a great website, and we send out flyers/mailers and Advertise in the Paper; yet it doesn't seem to be doing much. It's not just Our company, Furniture stores all over the country are seeing a drop in sales. Is There any advise or ideas that anyone has to help generate cusomers. Answers and advise are greatly appreciated. |

I would start with truly identifying your customers. Who the heck are they - and then explore the best way to target them. You are obviously not advertising correctly. |

I know it is the "picture" ads that catch my attention. Not just the sofa thing - whole well appointed room of furniture and accessories. I don't need any furniture right now, but I always look at these ads to see I maybe I missed something that I do need. There is a furniture store here that uses helium filled balloons that contain % discount tags - pop the balloon and get that discount (you have to be ready to buy the furniture before choosing your balloon). What catches your eye when looking through the newspaper ads? |

I agree with understanding who the buying public is. Is the furniture you offer the same old same old or are you constantly watching the styles and trends?
Have you paired up with designers in your area? Give them incentives like a discount if they come into your store and use your merchandise. Have an open house and invite all the designers in your area. Offer inexpensive but nicer furniture (than say walmart) that caters to the student or people who don't have a lot of room.
And definitely reexamine your marketing strategy. If your ads look like everyone else's - then they aren't going to work and if the flyers look cheap - that will put people off too.
Try billboards, the more upscale magazines in your area, and maybe radio or tv. TV might be the way to go for you since it gives people and idea of what you sell.

Better advertising. What you're doing obviously isn't working. Also, I know that furniture stores often do the 300% markup thing. My father always told me never buy from a furniture store because of that. I always look for used furniture, and sometimes check out the stuff that's been tossed on the side of the road. You need to try something 'edgy'. More modern stuff, less heavy oak, etc. People move a lot more now. I don't buy heavy furniture because I can't move it in and out of little apartments. Do some research into what people are buying now. |

Marketing is all about Positioning your Brand in the view of the consumer.
many marketing tools used in todays society are short sighted, fail and damage the brand in the long run.
I have consulted on many marketing proposals for numerous companies and I am always amazed and how they just dont get it.

This is a tough business to be in right now. Furniture is purchased with excess money & relocations. It is not a top priority. During the crash of 2000 through about 2006, money was still flowing well due to Home Equity Loans and refinancing. However, now that loan costs have started to go up, and foreclosures are rising rapidly, money from these sources has dried up. Your primary source of purchasing power is being squeezed. This said, your interested population is low. How to get them in?
Advertsing: You sound like you have most of it covered. I would focus the advertising by purchasing mailing lists of escrows that closed in your area. These are the people that may need furniture.
Location: You probably can't move your business. But, if you can, you want to be near a large new construction area.
Pricing: You're already doing what you can :)
