Last year, the oil company's appeared before Congress to answer the claims of Price Gouging. The oil company's posted Record profits, never seen before. It appears to me that Profits are directly tied to Disasters or some other calamity. With the Weather Service predicting a busy hurricane season, plus we are currently in a higher than normal tornado season, we will see gasoline prices exceed $3.00 per gallon. We'll never see $2.00 per gallon, ever again. |

To add to ZZsteel's comment, the price will increase until it equals the next alternative. This is likely to be a fuel that will run in most cars today, with few modifications. Such fuels are ethanol or diesel made from plants and maybe even vegetable oil. Saudi Arabia, in particular, does not want the price of gas as high as it is right now because it stimulates interest and research in alternative fuels. When we have a fuel that's cheaper than petroleum, OPEC will be out of business (along with a lot of terrorists). |

It will probably continue to climb as long as people are willing to pay. Last year, in the spring, they were predicting almost $3.00/gallon. (and this was before any hurricane pipeline or rigging damage). So, the big companies will charge, as long as we pay. |

While a direct dollar amount can not be given, the answer to your question is the price of gas will keep rising until the market (you and me) are not willing to pay those prices.
Since gas is a necessary product for our society, the market can bear a large price, and obviously it has. There will at some point have to be a check on these prices when we are not willing to pay these prices.
Of course we will also have to bear the profit that is built into gas. Exxon posted the greatest profit EVER in the history of business last year after Katrina. |
