Search engines like Google and Yahoo! generate their income from adverts you see on the right hand side of the search results. There operate on a 'cost per click' basis. (The patent belongs to Google, I think) If you want to advertise on Google, you specify an advert and which search term you want to target.
Say, you want to sell left-handed pens. You come up with and advert and specify which search terms you want to target. These might be 'left handed pens', 'lefthanded pens' and 'left handed biro' etc. You then place a bid on how much you are willing to pay per click, and how big your budget is. The higher your bid, the higher your position will be amongst the adverts. You click through rate will also be taken into consideration. Google will then automatically try to spend your budget in this way. You only get charge per click.
Google also operates Adsense which shows their ads on other people's websites. They use their search technology to look at those pages and decide which adverts to show. They share the revenue with those sites.

It’s a fact, the more internet users see you in the search results, the more likely they are to think you are relevant to the search results, which can attract them more to the product / service you are selling.
