How a supermarket make the customer stay longer?

They must have many ways to make the customer stay and buy, Does someone can tell me something about this?

I'm going to summarize what some others have said and add some other suggestions.

- Move products to obscure locations.

- Keep essential products on opposite ends of the store. People who want to buy some veggies, bread and some beverages will have to walk from one end of the store to the other to get all of their purchases.

- Soothing music: psychologically mellow music makes us feel more at ease, while music that is too upbeat or noisy will subconsciously make people shop faster and get out quicker.

- No clocks. This one is so true. Notice next time you go to Target or Walmart or another similar store how it's nearly impossible to find a clock on the wall.

- Interesting displays draw people to investigate products closers.

- Large magazine and book aisles. The one grocery store in my town that has a huge selection always has about 5 people just standing there reading magazines forever.

- Color scheme of the interior painting is important. Blue, especially light blue makes people feel more at ease. The worst colors to paint a store you want people to stick around in would be red or yellow since these are "busy" colors. Think about it, many fast food restaurants use yellows and reds...because they want you to get your food and go...not sit around all day inside.

- When a store has somebody passing out shopping carts to everybody who opens the door, it's because they know that if you've got a cart you'll tend to buy more than if you've only got a basket...or nothing at all.

- Add a coffee shop or deli to the supermarket with a small seating area. One of the grocery stores in my town recently added a coffee shop with chairs and tables and there are always people there reading newspapers...in the grocery store!

Have a coffee bar and treats so people see it as a place they can relax for a few minutes.

Have a floor plan that snakes you all through the store (Central Market in Austin Texas)

Offer child care for moms to get their shopping done without trying to keep the kids under control.

They could always lock the doors lol. I think they keep moving things around so you can't find them. This way you spend longer in the store and might see something else you want to buy as well as the things on your list. - devious lot!

Yes, they move products from the usual shelf so that it is more difficult to find and you spend more time looking for the product you really want to buy. During this search you are naturally forced to look at other product lines.

In store music helps.

Yes they move the products around on a regular bases, this makes you walk down different isles you wouldn't normally have to go which makes you pick up things you didn't really go into buy...........very crafty.
