I'm launching my first web site for local ( 4 counties) surfing enthuasists. Like everyone else, I'm on a tight budget. QUESTION: how can I attract surfers to my site without spending a load of cash? (I've considered having decals made and distributing them free to local surf shops to give away, bumper stickers, and flyers). Thanks in advance.

1. Find out where the surfers hang out online right now (blogs, sites, message boards) and go there to promote your site. If there is an online surfing community, start to participate and support other sites and they in turn will likely support yours. Any big and popular site that will link to you is a great opportunity. In my experience, the surfing community is really tight-knit so you have to make sure you get involved before you go overboard in promoting your site.
2. Promote the heck out of it in every opportunity with your current circle. Email everyone you know, even casual acquiantences and get them to visit the site. Make sure your friends that are surfers go there religiously.
3. Generate content for the site that people are excited about. Don't save your good stuff until your site is popular. There has to be a reason for people to visit.
4. Don't be discouraged. It can be really hard but you have to really grind and hustle to make it work.
Luckily, those suggestions should be free which can free up some of your budget for other avenues. Drop me an email and send me the URL for your site. I'd like to visit it and maybe give you a more personalized suggestion. |

Your direct marketing approach is a good one since you are targeting the locals.
You might try a contest of some sort. (The most creative use for sex wax?) Have a dozen muscle tees (surfers love em) made up with your website logo and address on the chest. Give them away to the winners.
Also, see if you can find out where the local surf shops advertise and put a listing for your site somewhere near.
For a one-time charge you can have a vehicle wrap made for your car. How cool would that be! |

Going rainbow, is really unattracted.
Make it look professional, so they know it's serious.
What's old is OLD, keep it in other folder for
them to check or delete them.

Its hard now a days to get traffic to a website. So much COMPETITION, YOU ARE BARLY NOTICED. MANUALLY ARDVERITISING IS NOT THE BEST WAY TO GO NOW A DAYS. IT WAS THREE YEARS AGO BUT, THINGS HAVE CHANGED. I use traffic machines to get my web traffic now a days and, I am spending less time on the computer. I have gotten most about 1000 visitors to my website a day. Not that many people know about it and its not going to be offered for a long time. |

You should try "Internet Marketing" it's selling on the web. I know an old lady who earns 15K every month working only a couple of hours a day.

PR is tough. Make up cards and fliers. Post them anywhere someone will let you. It doesn't have to be just surf shops.
Exchange links with anyone you know that has a website. Contact other site owners via email to see it they would be willing to exchange links with you (reciprocal linking).
If you are selling something online, try to put fliers, coupons, cards, door hangars (whatever) anywhere you can offering a discount on the first purchase.
Your bumper sticker idea is great. If you come up with a catchy phrase to put on it (not just your website name), then surfers will put it on their cars just because of the catchy phrase. Your website name goes under the catchy phrase.
Go to online newsgroups, forums etc and become a member. Drop a plug for your site in any post you make.
Put a link to your site in every email you send. Mention your site to each person you talk to. Ask your friends to do the same.
If you can afford it, advertise your site in the newspaper or online.
Find people on craigslist that are looking for or selling surf items. Drop them a line and mention your site.
Just a few ideas.
