An easy way to get some clients quick would be to join freelance sites such as http://www.elance.com as a service provider and do some work for dirt cheap at first in order to get established and start building your Portfolio.
If you do good work you'll be able to gather testimonials, get word of mouth referrals, and get repeat business. You could also offer your clients cash incentives or discounts on future projects to refer other clients to you. Since word-of-mouth is the most powerful form of advertising on the planet, this will work wonders for your business.
Hope that helps,

Easy question/ Hard work in the beginning. There is much money to be made in that business.
Since your home based, and a small business, you need to do the obvious (hopefully) which is to build up your clientele, and your network. Once you have a great network, business will come to you through word of mouth, etc.
To get there will take time, hardwork, and some sales skill.
The answer:
Instead of waiting for clients you need to go out and get them, literally. Find out your target market and the clients that you want. If it is businesses that have a need for your skill such as magazine publishers, then you should do a search for all publishers in your area of business through internet/yellow pages.
Then call every single one of them, and try to find out who the decision maker is for choosing you as a vendor, try to get them on the line, once you have them, try and set an appointment with them. Once you have the appointment, you are in. Close the deal. You need to be professional, bring marketing materials, and tell the decision maker why they need to use you. Boom! you have the sale now do an excellent job, and follow up and you have a customer for life. This wont work everytime, but you need to make at least 50 calls a day and set goals for yourself on how many appointments you set for the day. Once your skills improve your closing ratio will increase and you will gain confidence.
Another thing that you should do immediately is join a networking group and join the local chamber of commerce in your area. In the beginning of your business, you should try to participate in as many luncheons, and after hours networking events as you can. Talk to many people, make friends, and pass out business cards. You will be amazed how much business they will throw your way.
Just remember to do good prospecting, and target the market that you want to do business in. It doesnt make sense to focus your sales energy to businesses that dont have a need for you.
You should definitely consider hiring some help because you will definitely be busy trying to find clients and may not have ample time to produce quality service and products. You could hire sales personnel to take over the sales function and just pay them commisions on sales, and give them contractor status so you dont have to worry about paying them taxes or healthcare or anything.
Remember that the hard work and hours that you invest in establishing your network and clientele will definitely payoff and years later you wont even have to find new clients anymore. |
