I have no idea how it happened, but my site shows up as number 20 on a list of 15,500 entries. If I get all of my friends to google the site every day, will it eventually get into the top ten listings? I do not have $20,000 a month to pay for having the site optimized.

There are items in the question that are missing and would help
1. web site
2. key phrase
Google learns from human clicks about the success of the search results. if you search for a phrase on google,
if you click the link and go back to Googles search results page - that tells Google that the web site you went to is not so good (for this key phrase).
on the other hand, clicking a web site on Google seach results and not coming back to Google tells Google you found what you were looking for.
To complete the picture - for you to be in the top 10, one of the top 10 needs to go down. Is your web site better then all 10? What makes you think that your web site needs to be there, while someone elses does not.
being on Google top 30 (first 3 pages) is great and will bring you traffic. |

I think your question should be how to promote your websites. You need to know some of the web marketing strategies and techniques. Optimize your websites is just one of the techniques.
There is a lot of way to advertise either free or at a very low cost online. These are broadly classified into 3 main area. 1) Buy Traffic 2)Build Traffic and 3)Steal Traffic. All of these are trying to get more visitor to visit your websites and eventually know more of your invention and get the products from you.
I normally use (2) and (3) as some of these methods are often free or at a low cost.

It will tell you what are these steps, the reason for each step, how you could go around doing it and where you could get the necessary resources free or at a low price.

Sorry, getting a lot of people to go to your website will not get you in the top 10.
You did not mention the key phrase that got you to #15. If the phrase is not one people use often then you will not see a lot of new visitors. There is nothing bad about setting up pages for phrases not often used. In fact, this is recommended because your chances of getting into the top 10 for a competitive phrase is near zero in the generic search (left side)..
There are also "long tail" phrases Go to nichebot.com to find the less often used phrases and build pages around them.

There is no easy way to get your site a high ranking.
1) Target the right keywords. Target the wrong keyword phrases and your online business is destined to fail.
2) Don't use keywords or phrases that are too broad. The competition is too fierce, and research has shown that though you will get more traffic through general phrases, that traffic doesn't convert to sales. All of the traffic in the world will do you no good if it doesn't convert to sales!
3) Optimize your page content. Target each Web page to a different and highly focused keyword phrase. In other words, your main page should be optimized for one keyword phrase. Are the keywords used relative to the site's overall content? Do you use too many keywords, or too few?
