When I look for my own company name, it doesn't come up when I search for a specific business, but when I search the exact name it does come up. Ex. If I'm searching for candy stores, it doesn't show up, but if I search for Jill's Candy it will come up, I want it to show when I search for candy stores.

I guess this is the best way to explain it.
Let’s say I’m going to build a website about candy. I’ll hire me a designer and get the website designed and set up. I’ll then hit some forums like http://www.geeksonsteroids.com/forum/ and http://www.webproworld.com/ and ask for a website review.
This allows me to fine tune my site as well as get a free link coming into my site.
Now I’m going to use some tools like

To build me a list of keywords.
Don’t freak out but I try and build a list of about 20,000. I’ll then go through and create a landing page for each of those keywords.
I’ll use the keywords in the title, meta tags and in the content. Once that’s done I’ll submit the site to some directories and write a couple articles and submit them to the article sites as well as do a press release or two.
The search engines follow links, by submitting the site to the directories, article sites and doing some press releases I’ve let the search engines know about the site.
I don’t want to sit around and wait on the search engines. I need to start making money, so I’ll start building a web presence.
• I’ll create a myspace profile named Mydomain.com
• I’ll submit a couple more articles to article directories with my keyword as the title
• I’ll upload videos with my url in the description to Myspace tv
• I’ll create an Amazon AStore named Mydomain-com
• Create a channel on Youtube using my keyword
• Post on some forums
• Do some social bookmarking
The list can go on and on but the one thing all these have in common is that I can link back to my site and drive traffic back to my site. While I’m working on getting traffic to my site the search engines will be following the links and learning more about my site. Every link is a vote for my site.
If the link to my site has the keyword candy in it then the search engines will be counting the links and votes for the keyword candy and moving me up in the search engines for that page.

SEO is a long, and complicated subject. I will leave the learning up to you! (Way to much to put here!)
HOWEVER...
Write some articles on candy that you sell in your shop. Write some ads around people's favorite candy. Blog about your candy shop, and make sure you include words of specific candy. It is easiest to blog at blogger.com - in my opinion anyway!
You will want to check out the "Bum Marketing Method". He has free videos online that will amaze you. It really works. It got my blog listed at #'s 3 - 8 on Google. All for free! (It has to do with long tail keywords... 3 or more keywords strung together).
You will get it. It just takes a little time! |

Write some blogs and in that insert your company's name with what you deal with repeatedly even mentioning the plce of your office. Then the search engine will pick it up whenever somebody searches with similar names. |

I normally answer questions only when there has been something left unsaid. In this case it's all been said to one degree or another.
In review...
* PPC (I would use this only after getting familiar with other Internet Marketing tactics.)
* Blogs (Excellent out of the gate as it's free. I too believe Blogger is better than any other service including Word Press. Be sure to link the two together.)
* Web 2.0 (You may experience a learning curve before you find success, but it's free and very much worth it. Backlinks are always much more valuable than swaplinks.)
* SEO (Don't miss this step. You can succeed without proper SEO activities, but that's like trying to water ski without ski's. It can be done, but it can also be painful. * Articles (This is a huge key to success in Internet Marketing.)

* Conclusion:
While getting your site posted where you want it to be at may take some time, it is truly worth it. There are numerous methods of making this happen, some of which have not been described above. Don't try to jump at everything all at once, but rather choose 1 or 2 Internet Marketing methods, perfect those methods, and then increase your reach as you are ready to do so. I personally would start with bummarketing once your website has been created.
NOTE:
Answering people's questions here on Yahoo Answers is yet another way of Internet Marketing as you get to have a backlink as long as your answer has been relevant to the question being asked.
