How can I get my website higher up googles listing without paying?

There are businesses out there that make millions answering this question for other online business owners. I wish there was a simple answer to your question, but the fact is: There isn't! A lot of knowledge goes into SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to obtain organic search traffic (traffic that is not sponsored, or paid for per click).

Here are just a few things I've picked up over the years from working with various Search Engine Marketing companies:

1. Content is King - I'm sure you've heard it before, make sure you have fresh content on your pages so the search engines have something new to index on a regular basis. Also, the number of unique pages your site consists of will give you better chances of ranking higher. WARNING: Do not roll out too many pages at once or you will be flagged by Google as a spammer. Also, do not write a script to duplicate pages because they won't be unique enough to be indexed. Your best bet is user generated content or dynamic content from some kind of feed.

2. Clean & Updated HTML Tags - Back in the day everyone, and I do mean everyone, designed their websites with table layouts. This has died out and is actually frowned upon by most savvy web developers. The way to go is using positioned div tags and style sheets. It's faster and more efficient once you get the hang of it. Also you will want to make use of your title tags and meta keyword and description tags. People say these have been phased out, but it's untrue. Search Engines still look at them, they are just not weighted as heavily as they once were. Another great thing to do is use heading and bold tags to emphasize important content. Place your important content near the top of your HTML coding as well, and put things like menus toward the bottom of the page.

3. Site Maps - Be sure to create and update a site map so that Search Engines can find pages within your website easily.

4. Linking - It use to be to get better page rank you would just do some kind of reciprocal link share with someone. Well, Google has caught wind of the sham and changed their algorithm. Now link exchange isn't a very helpful tactic in improving SEO and may even end up hurting you. Your best bet is to get one way deep links out there. One way links are just sites that link in to yours. Deep links are links that go to subpages within your website, not just the home page. You'll want sites with higher page ranks than yours linking to you. When too many low page rank sites are linking in, it can also damage your SEO efforts. :(

In order for someone to do this for themselves you really need to learn SEO which search engine optimization which is a simply process but there are many ways to achieve this.

However it would be nearly 50 pages of writing to explain how you do it all here.

essentially you want to base your website around a few choice keywords and then start getting back links to your webpages that have anchor text as your keywords... Hi hun, the best answer is a well constructed website. Make sure all links are active use page componants and colours that are comon on most browsers, adjust your meta tags in the header area of the page, get others to link to your page known as precipicol links or spelt something like that.... Erm there is a link on google to request they scan your site but google will find anyway but just ask them through the google page it wont hurt.

Google estimates ranking based on a number of (complicated) factors. One of these factors is the density of keyword usage. In other words, if your web site is about growing orchids, Google will analyse the number of times that the phrase "growing orchids" appears in your site. If you use it too often, Google will decide you are spamming and knock you out of the rankings altogether. If you don't use it enough, Google decides "growing orchids" isn't relevant and gives you a lower ranking. Keyword analyses is a huge topic.

Google also bases ranking on other factors -- such as the amount of traffic you receive and the number of other sites that link to you. The traffic thing is a chicken and egg -- you don't get traffic because you have a poor ranking and you have a poor ranking because you don't get traffic.

The one thing you can do quite a bit about, without spending money, is do something about the number of sites that link to you. There are plenty of ways you can do this. Write articles about your topic, and submit them to the article directories. Put a link to your web site in the resource box. Make blogs on free blogging platforms, or Squidoo lenses, and link to your site. Post your site to all of the social bookmarking web sites. Use a tool like Social Marker or Social Poster to do this quickly and relatiely easily.

You need to link out to lots of other websites. Also make sure your meta tags are done well.
