I have a small retail dance & gymnastics wear business and I'd like to find my new site by using Yahoo! and/or Google. However, not even Yahoo! who provides the site list mine. I'd like to keep cost down so a pay listing isn't desirable at this time.
You can get into the local versions of the major engines by applying on their site. Just do a search and find the page. There is an application and they will send a postcard to your business to verify it is a real address. Just fill it out, send it back and in about 4-6 weeks you are listed. It is a great way for a new business with a small budget to get qualified traffic. You should also check out TrueLocal once you get a budget.

Some of the ways I drive traffic to my site:
* submit the web address to online directories (http://info.vilesilencer.com has a list of good ones)
* write articles and submit them to article directories like http://www.ezinearticles.com
* register with appropriate forums and contribute to the community with helpful advice
Each of those methods have worked well for me.

Don't kid yourself
You cannot ignore the power of traditional marketing to guide people to your web site.
1. Identify your target market
2. Place ads in the right publications guiding them to your site.
3. Do mailings.
The web site is only one of the many promotional tools you have.
You may give offer some free info on your ad and then hit them with a more detailed message on the web.
Search engine listings are hard to get and only reach those who are surfing.

The simple truth that being listed in the search engines isn't enough. You're going to need a detailed plan to reach your target market and unless you're in the top results you're not going to be getting any serious traffic if any to your site.
You're going to need the help of an organization that has done it before, because the do-it-yourself inclusion stuff isn't enough. And the blogging isn't enough. The search engines want the most relevant, quality links possible. You'll need someone who can show you how to properly utilize YouTube and MySpace video search as well to build your brand through viral marketing.
Just keep in mind you get what you pay for. And do you really want a do-it-yourself way of building your business? Or rather you leverage the resources of a company with the expertise and the track record to bring you to the top. (My clients receive thousands of visitors monthly from Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask. This is normal when you work with the proper company.)
Feel free to check out the URL below, if you mention you're from Yahoo! Answers I'll give you free site analysis as well as an hour of consultation on the house.
Good Luck!
