My family is purchasing a dry cleaners which was sagging (mostly due to poor management), and I'm helping to develop a marketing strategy to pick up the biz. I need some preferably low-cost ideas to get the word out in nearby residential (or business?) areas. I am considering going door to door w/ flyers, or doing a postcard mail out, but I don't know how effective these will be and I'd like some more creative ideas to throw into the mix. Can you help? Are there any important factors I should be aware of? |

Personally - flyers are not my thing - they end up in my recycle bin before I read them. Coupons are the way to go - I always look for coupons!
I've had an after thought.... honestly flyers are not creative.... sponsor a sports team or two, give the kids parents some sort of incentive and if you do a great job word of mouth will spread! Also... partner with a radio station to offer a contest - the winner gets "free dry cleaning" for a period of time (year??)
Run a Coats of Kids campaign or collect clothing for a women's shelter and get publicity that way.

Flyers are the best. You can make them cheap and hand them out don't go door to door people hate that. Stand on a busy corner or in front of your business and hand them out. Maybe put a coupon on them to draw in the customers. See how much and ad in your local newspaper would cost. |

A flyer with a coupon is good! Take them to businesses nearby and the residential areas. See if you can leave some at the checkout stand at the grocery store near by as well. |

NOT FLYERS! I see that many folks here have recommended them but it's the easy answer not the best.
What's the answer?Look for VOLUME. Identify another business that will need frequent dry cleaning of uniforms and offer a volume discount to them. |

I'm with Jennifer K. I HATE flyers, I hate em hate em hate em. I don't like flyers. When they're on my car, I make a mental note of the company and I refuse to do business with them ever ever again. When they're on my door in my home, I don't even look, they go straight to recycle.
My attitude about flyers is a little strong, but I assure you I'm not the only one. And a coupon is NOT going to change my mind about the flyer. I do like those coupon packets they put in the mail, Valuesense or something like that.
But, again, I have to go with Jennifer K. You want something to make people NOTICE you. Everyone does flyers! They are sooooo not creative! Sponsor some events and get the local papers/news to cover you. You don't even have to promo yourselves, then, just promo your event and people will come. A drive for Toys for Tots. Collection point for bicycles for the fire department to fix up for Christmas presents. Recycling center. Drop off for a local food bank. And, most especially, ANYTHING having to do with your forte: clothes! Do drives to collect coats for kids, Dress for Success outfits for women, anything along those lines.
Be sure to choose causes you believe in yourselves, and that you are willing to volunteer for yourselves. Throw yourselves into voluteering for that... then you'll be known in the community as a business that cares, REALLY cares. I love doing business with companies like that as much as I hate flyers! |

Fliers and pass them out door to door and put them on cars' windshield wipers in store parking lots. Don't do the mailers postage is too high for that.
A bit of advice. Advertise that the business is under new management. In the local paper and have a banner made from a sign co. and hang is outside on your building. "Renovate" the building. Paint, clean it up nice, have bright lights. This will show everyone that you take pride in your business and you have made it really nice.
If there are large businesses in your area print up fliers with a coupon on them because most dry cleaners see alot of professional attire, suits, shirts that business men don't have time to iron. Drop off a bunch of them at the front desk and ask if they could be put in with the pay checks or put in the break room.
Good luck, work hard and it will pay off!!!
