I think that you may have a misconception about affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing itself is not about selling hopes and dreams. It is about providing solutions to others needs and collecting a commission for doing your part in advertising.
It seems as though you are getting mixed up by those seeking to sell you on get rich quick affiliate marketing schemes. You just need to do some more homeWORK on affiliate marketing. Yes, affiliate marketing takes work.
Here's an introduction from the web host that I use.
Affiliate Monetization Model
In 1997, Amazon.com launched the concept of affiliate programs into prominence (they weren't the first, but they were the first to do it big-time!). For the one person on the Net who doesn't know, Amazon sells books (and tons of other merchandise now) online... and only online.
Books, of course, offer information on millions of different specialized subjects. And there are millions of Web sites out there, on an incredible variety of subjects.
So Amazon figured, "Why not convert those sites into specialized, niche book shops for us? We'll pay a commission when a site refers a customer who buys a book."
And that's how Amazon started one of the first affiliate programs (AKA associate or referrer programs).
Here's how an affiliate program works, using Amazon as the example...
The affiliate provides links from his site to certain books on the Amazon site, books that are related to the affiliate's site content. Amazon uses special software that tracks who sends each visitor. If and when the visitor buys, Amazon pays the affiliate a commission.
The affiliate never has to...
* write a book
* process an order
* ship a book
* answer customer support e-mails.
And the same applies to any product that is sold in this way... CDs, travel, domain names, even sheep!

I think it depends on how you approach affiliate marketing. You're right on one point, that most affiliate marketers, heck, marketers in general for that matter, are 'dream sellers' in a sense.
But, if you think about it, realistically, that's what the general public wants. They want you to tell them that 'YES!' you can earn tons of money from your easy chair, or 'YES!' you can lose 100 pounds in 2 weeks by following a simple plan that they are selling.
It's just the way of the world. To be a great marketer, you have to understand a few key concepts of psychology and know that most people browsing the internet in search of spending their cash are looking for 'quick and easy answers' to their problems.
To be a better affiliate marketer I would suggest the following:
1. Pick ONE subject, or 'niche' and stick with it. Center your entire site around just this one subject matter without scatter-braining your subject with a set of 'sub-subjects'.
2. To find the ONE subject or 'niche' you should be concentrating on, do a bit more research through Google Adwords and find out what keywords other people are paying the most for to get people visiting their sites.
3. Be sure to put up plenty of freely available information on your subject of choice, such as running a blog using Wordpress, Blogger, or similar. For this, you can use Private Label Articles, or free articles, but in my opinion, to make the most of this free article info for your site visitors, I would write up reviews of certain products and why you think they would be a good purchase for your visitors.
4. Submit some articles to free article directories on a regular basis. A couple a week would do fine to begin.
5. Make use of social networks to talk more about affiliate products you are trying to earn an income from. Sites such as Squidoo, Facebook, or MySpace would start you in the right direction.
The main thing is you want to send as much traffic to your site as possible. And, once you do this, you should see an improvement in your affiliate marketing efforts. |

It can be frustating and many affiliate marketers work on the premise of targeting a persons key drivers such as financial freedom,an automated income and spending time with family when promoting money making opportunities on the internet.
I have been somewhat guilty of this myself. I am a full time eBay/Affiliate marketer and try to tell it how it is. If you sell hopes and dreams without a great product you will get found out anyway and make no money in the long-term.
Given you dont like selling to the "hopes and dreams" of others you might want to try eBay affiliate marketing. I make quite of bit of money with this. Its where you receive a commission from eBay for every sale you refer and lead you provide. It wont make you a millionaire but you can generate a great income.

Oh, I so know what you're feeling. "Been there; done that myself. But I DID find some good stuff. Ways to sell online products, so there's no inventory and there's quick, rapid delivery. AND, I found ways to select great products (e.g. Private Label products, that you can improve as you want) and products that you have researched and discovered and want to sell. Yes, there's inventory and shipping, but you're delivering real, worthwhile products to your customers. Some of my products I sell on ebay (in my Sunglow Specialties store; ck. it out) and others I sell on various sites.
But my biggest find, which is for real, is on my site: YourGateKey.com. There you will find an honestly FREE, excellent manuscript that goes right to what you are asking. Check it out (along with my ebay store, too.) I think you'll be very pleased. "Hopes and dreams" yes. But not sold; it's FREE. |

Well it's working out for me just fine. It took me about six months of research trial n error on make money online affiliate programs before I started making good money.
It doesn't happen overnight, it takes allot of work and you have to stick with it.
