Another way is to get a bunch of pencils and/or pens (golf pencils will do) with your web address printed on them, then start "forgetting" them in high traffic locations such as the bank, Customer Service desk at the grocery store, the little desk where people fill out lottery betting slips, laundry mats, bars (you get the idea). People will pick them up and say "hmm, I wonder what this site is all about."
Go get some T-shirt transfers and make a T-shirt with your web address on it then where it to high-profile events such as Air shows, expos, fairs and carnivals, flea markets, etc. Make sure to have a catchy slogan that will incite curiosity for example if your website sells candles you slogan might say something like "Find out why I love Christmas so much www.yourwebsite.com" then people will ask you you about it and you can tell them how much you love the scent of pine needles and how you make a candle that smells just like it and how they can get one (or three)

One thing that's important to remember is that not only do you have to offer the surfer content, it has to be better and fresher than what's found elsewhere. Even if you have good content, it will eventually be copied to youtube, and people will no longer have a motive to visit your site.
One trap that sites fall into is trying to offer everything...unfortunately, you have to focus your content to fill a specific niche or appeal strongly to a core audience. This means focusing content around a theme (for example, humor), or a demographic (for example, men).
