Techniques for generating traffic to your websites are often different depending on the content your website provides. One way to get traffic on a website is to make yourself visible in the community related to your content. Many forums and social networking sites will allow you to fill out a profile where people can see your website.
To get large bursts of traffic, take your best content and try submitting it to Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, etc... If your content gets popular you could earn thousands of visitors this way. Just be sure to submit relevant content that you think the internet would like to see and don't attempt to promote a business or spam these sites as you will be wasting your time. (People will just bury your posts if they suspect spam or simply promoting a business)
Lastly, the search engines will not find your site unless you make it visible to them. If you don't have any links from a website already indexed by the engines pointing to yours the only other way to get listed is to submit your site manually. My personal experience has shown that getting links to your site seems to get you indexed quicker than other available method. Inbound links to your site are also one of the important factors to making your way to the top of the lists.
Be careful not to sign up or utilize any type of link farm or "black hat" techniques to building links as this could potentially get you penalized or even banned from the engines once they catch you. |

How you attract customers is as much about the product as the marketing vehicles. Social sites are good, but only if people have some incentive to tell their friends.
