you cant 'make' people like you. they either do or they dont.i have a friend "Al", nobody seems to like the guy and when he kisses the bosses **** it makes things worse for him cuz he losses the respect of fellow workers. me? I tend not to give a hoot what the boss thinks of me (or what my co-workers think of me for that matter).
i just do my job and do it well and guess what? the boss and my co-workers tend to like me alot. go figure... |

he may like you right now. some people just don't go overboard with praise. in my last job as an accounting manager, i got ONE attaboy in 6 years. for a long time i thought that she didn't like the work i did. but then after a while i started noticing her reaction towards others. NO ONE got praise. i asked others who worked in the office if she ever said "good job". everyone responded with a "no". once i realized that this was just her personality, i relaxed some.
is that an optimal condition to work under? no, its not. as a manager myself I tried extra hard to verbalize praise for my employees at least daily, and in front of others if possible.
let me clear something up----i did get at least one "attaboy" every year at review time. but what my boss didn't get was that verbal praise can work wonders if it is liberally applied.
watch how your boss treats others, it sounds to me that you've got a GREAT boss compared to my old boss! do others get more praise? if he's effusive in praise to others, there may be a problem. are the other coworkers male? if you are the only female he may be afraid of saying too much to you for fear of being accused of sexual harrassment. hey, don't laugh---as a male and a manager i really had to watch what i said around my female employees to avoid offense being taken.
good luck---it really sounds to me like you've got a good boss. keep working hard, you sound like you're going places. |

Know your boss's priorities, Say no. Say "yes" to the things that matter most to your boss. Say "no" to everything else and your boss will notice you are prioritized. Talk like your boss. If your boss likes e-mail, use it. Toot your own horn. Each time you do something that impacts the company, let your boss know.
Lunch with your boss. If all things are equal, your boss will promote the person he likes the best. So go out to lunch and talk about what interests him. Get her on your side by asking her for advice on something about work. If you are very different than your boss, work hard to find common ground in your conversations. Everyone has common ground if you hunt hard enough.
Seek new responsibilities. Be curious. Remember to make time to read and listen.

if he didnt like you. he wouldnt say anything. i know the guy i work with. if i dont like them i tell them something mean. he likes you as a person if he is complimenting you. so dont worry about it. and show him you are trying your hardest to do what you can for the job. and he will see it. he doesnt have to like you for the promotion. if the person is doing his / her job and if good at it.. that is worth the promotion. just smile. say hi and make small talk. good luck with your promo. |

find out what he is interested in. if he plays golf start playing golf and get to know the game so if talks about it you have something informed to say. notice the pictures he has in his office and on his desk. if he has pics of vacations and places maybe put brochures from such places on your desk. if he notices them it could spark a conversation. you have to find his interests and play to those. people love to talk about themselves, have a tendency to like people like themselves, and they are incredibly nosy. if he notices you share some interests he will like you more and be more likely to mention your name if a promotion comes along |
