How did marks and spencer survive for so long without a marketing department?

M&S was first established in 1884 and opened it's first full store in 1894 and the official store was opened in 1904. when they first started they were pioneers in buying their goods directly from the manufacturers and not using wholesale distributors. in 1926 they started selling textiles and adopted the trademark of St. Michaels. They only sold goods made in Britian and focused on customer satisfaction and quality in the 50's and 60's you could return an item with proof of purchase no matter how long ago it was purchased. now it is a 90 day return policy.
M&S unlike many of it's rivals decided to rely on it's reputation to attract customers. and it wasn't until the mid 1990's that they started advertising.
the lack of advertising and marketing hurt the company in the long run. partly due to the lack of market research and target marketing.. the younger generation now the major buying group was unfamiliar with M&S's reputation and M&S was not providing products targeted at this group.
Sales plummeted and many stores were closed. Many of the manufacturers that relied on M&S for business also closed.
M&S was too exclusive, they only accepted cash or a M&S credit card and in the age of plastic that was also a factor in the loss of customers, along with the stores policy of not opening on a Sunday.
So although they did survive it was barely!! They are now slowly recovering from it and have created new clothing lines and changed many old policies. M&S's biggest problem was not so much a lack of a marketing dept, but the fact that they did not keep up to date with the products they offered.

I think they managed because they depended on their reputation instead. Throughout the 19th century they had a policy on selling only British-made goods which allowed them to enter into long term relationships with British manufacturers. The emphasis they put on quality made them an icon and built a faithful customer base. Also sometimes the lack of advertising (especially when all your rivals advertise) can be positive.

Thats is interesting isnt it! I would guess they would say that marketing, like quality was endemic in everything they did. And there are parallels with those great individuals (Brason, Sugar etc) who all got started and reached success without a "marketing" department. So they thrived (not just survived as you suggest) quite well for quite long enough without a unique department called marketing didnt they!

stibbs
they survived by poisoning the whole of the UK with salt in their food ! ooha
