How do American companies market to low-income people?
To elaborate... Companies use different tactics in visual advertising to appeal to low-income consumers. Can you give any incite to what those tactics may be? Any other information you may have is welcome too!

Wal-Mart.

"We may be the evil empire, but we're cheap."

Dollar Stores.

"Our food may not have any nutrients, but well, it's a dollar."

Trashy-looking Liquor Stores.

"The American Dream may have left you behind, but hey, you don't have to buy the best booze to get blasted anyways."

The two answers above mine by the ladies are very good. However there is a time, place and product for low-income people, Low doesn't mean no.

To find them we can use data bases that have been broken down into PRIZM Clusters. There are some 60 different clusters (from "Shotguns & Pickups" to "Pools & Patios."). These are reported geographically by ZIP code or neighborhood unit (to get even tighter). Then mailed to, cabled to, special delivery sectioned to (newspaper), billboarded to in their part of town (because it is definitely a geographic thing).

Check it out on the search engines. Amazing stuff and accurate. I've been using it for years for my clients.

The most common example I can think of is using actors (TV and print ads both) who are dressed simply, conducting every day business... the "That could be me/my neighbor" concept of connection with the consumer.

Mom in jeans and sweater driving kids to school, running late... the fast food restaurant she chooses to stop at for value-priced sausage biscuits and juice is going to sell better to low income consumers... ditto for the child in jeans and a sweatshirt counting out his change to buy something from the Dollar Menu of the same chain.

Dad in jeans and tennis shoes shopping along the aisles of a retail store, looking for the best price on a plumbing self-repair kit will sell that chain store to low income consumers.

Alternatively, what would NOT sell to low income consumers would be if a kid with a ton of bling and a boombox came in ordering a big bucket of something to go share with his homies... or if a mother in a business suit pulled up to drive-thru to shut out the incessant whining of her children because, for her, it's just easier to buy them dinner than to cook it because she's been in court all day as an attorney.

Ditto for a guy in a suit, just getting off work, walking the aisles of that same store, thrilled with the selection of lighting fixtures for his recently remodeled dining room. Selling to different folks there.

For the most part legitimate advertising execs don't target low income buyers in their marketing campaigns. They would be crazy to focus on the low income buyer since low income purchasers have little buying power. They are going to target the middle class buyers since there are more of them and they want to keep up with Joneses or Smith's next door. If the guy next door has a fancy car and new appliances then they have to go out of their way to keep up appearances. They will extend themselves into oblivion with credit cards and loans to have what the advertisers say "everyone else" has or the latest trinket or toy that they have to get before the Smith's do so they can be the first in their circle to have it. Whatever "it" may be. Walmart, K-mart, Dollar General and so forth will market to the middle class buyer by having similar items that look as good as the expensive Department store product at a reduced price. Television is perhaps the only entertainment that the low income family or buyer would have and there again they will see the ads from Walmart etc that show them they to can afford the same things as the Smith's next door or up the street etc. Lotteries, get rich quick schemes and the payday loan or check cashing facilities are going to specifically target the low income or lower middle class buyer by giving them hope and empty promises. The low income or fixed income elderly are also targets for these type of schemes particularly the entries into contests because they think that buying something will give them a better chance at winning the "big" prize. Mailers, newspapers etc are how advertisers can reach the low income buyer most directly.

just thinking
do you ever watch TV? TV ads and junk mail are the two main ways companies market their products.

maria46622
they can advertise what is called 'loss leaders'...this is where they sell a certain product eg bread/milk (which are essentials)at a loss to get people into the stores and therefore they will buy the rest of their shopping there!

ha! LabRAt beat me to it..
its WALMART
if the brand is sold there,, it gets seen by low income people

they usually have lots of liquor stores in their neighborhoods

Daytime television. They may not have a job, but somehow they have cable TV. They utilize commercials during Matlock reruns "You too could be a truck driver or a medical assistant".

I think one way may be that they show an average joe with a HOT woman, cause he takes a pill, or is in a club of sorts, or uses a type of deodorant. Basically just unrealistic situations or fantasy's in hopes of gaining new customers. Like one in particular.. An average joe drinking a specific type of soda, got him all kinds of looks and raised eyebrow's from women. Riiiight.
