I think Google and Yahoo can generate considerable sales volume with ads alone. They have ads with sponsored sites for their search engines, travel company links with their maps, and a variety along the border of home pages. Some ads are on the page's borders, some are imbedded in articles, some are popups when you use certain features, and some are disguised as articles on news or helpful tips. Those articles seem like they contain helpful statistics and professional advice and then "recommend" a particular brand, usually with a link or information for ordering those products or services. |

One of the reasons that Yahoo suffered so badly when the web bubble burst was directly due to their reliance on advertising. They do offer business level products, such as email and web hosting, but they still receive a great deal of revenue from ads.
It isn't all that different from TV stations. You aren't paying them, the advertisers are. A shows ratings can make or break them. This is why even bad shows can stay on air for years if they consistently win their time slot. |
