theycallmebruiser | How do I ask a subscriber to renew w/o using the words "your subscription has expired"? |
I work in specialized information publishing, completely subscription-based.
We're starting a telemarketing campaign to expired subscribers to get them to renew, but I heard you're not supposed to say "your subscription is expired, would you like to renew?"
If you say "your subscription is expired," it gets the person thinking, "well, I must have expired for some reason, I probably didn't like my subscription..." whereas not using that wording has a good renewal rate.
Is it a matter of semantics, or should the entire message be different? |

"It's time to renew your subscription." |

As you have surmised, it's mostly an issue of semantics.
First, you want to let the customer know that you appreciate their business. You also want to remind them of the tremendous value they have received since first signing up. So by the time you get around to reminding them to renew, you sound like you are doing them a favor!
For example (and this is very rough).
Dear CUSTOMER NAME,
We want to thank you for being a member of NAME OF COMMUNITY. Over the past several months, we're sure you've come to appreciate our MENTION BENEFITS AND SERVICES. To ensure that you don't miss continued service, please take a moment to renew your subscription.
Thank you. We look forward to continuing to serve you.
As part of the renewal, you might offer the subscriber a chance to review their profile or account for accuracy. This might reinforce the idea that you are making sure they are receiving prompt delivery of their subscription.
I hope this helps. |

In these harsh economic times, you've got your work cut out for you. Take a cue from the big publishers: contact people one or two months before their subscription ends and offer them a benefit for renewing early. For subscriptions that have already expired, you'll need a little bit sweeter offer.
I don't think there's anything wrong with stating that a customer's subscription has expired, but if you feel strongly that avoiding the phrase will benefit your renewal rate, try something like: To show our appreciation for your past subscription, we would like to offer you ___ if you renew with us today. |

Hi,
I have a lot of experience marketing small companies online (I have 3 companies). One of the best ways is to sign up at business directories and protals. These are basically listings of businesses (simliar to the phone book). The advantage is that these portals usually get a lot of traffic and they're ranked high on Google because of all the quality links they contain.
My favorite portal is called Directory Exclusive. I signed up a few weeks ago because they're giving a away a free business card holder when a person enter's their company info. I received it in the mail 3 days ago =)
I don't know if they still have that promotion, but you can try to get the free card holder here:

This might not answer your question exactly as you're wording it, but my thought when I read your question was, what are you doing to prevent your subscribers from letting their subscription expire? I hope I have this right, but it sounds like you are trying to get people to renew a subscription, which they've let expire. If that is correct, then I would say you should address this situation first by putting some program in place so that you're contacting them a few months prior to their subscription expiring.
In either case, remember, the easiest person to sell to, is someone who has bought from you before. Having said that, it still would be easier to keep someone from letting their subscription expire, than it would be to resign someone who has let it expire.
Hope that helps. |

I asked a question about how to bring subscribers back after their dues had lapse in such as way as not to be offensive. I love the suggestions I received here in this discussion and was able to draft a successful campaign. Thanks |
