How do I become and excellent sales person?
I work with a radio station in the Caribbean selling advertising to businesses. How can I boost my sales by a 1000% and stand out from all the other sales people in the market place?

You will probably get lots of different answers, but my opinion on what makes a good sales person is this:

1) product knowledge - yours and your competitors! You have to know how to position your product and respond to any objections to be able to effectively offer your product as a solution to meet the buyers need.

2) develop a relationship built upon trust, honesty, integrity - your competitor may do the "hard sell" but developing an honest relationship will lead to word of mouth referrals and customers for life! Get to know the individual, their office staff (gate keepers), their business, their competition, their market space so that you can position your product to completely meet their needs.

3) once you have developed a relationship and you know your product is the right solution, ask for the business. Customers expect it and if you have responded to any objections, developed an honest relationship, then you should be in a nice position to close the deal.

4) for customer that provide on-going sales - thank them for the business. Let me know how important they are and that you value them as a customer. Ask them to recommend your product to colleagues.

Good luck!

"How To Win Customers & Keep Them For Life" by Michael LeBoeuf, was a really good book I read recently on how to be a really strong sales person. I've spent MANY years in sales and what the other fellow says about be yourself and go the extra mile and interact with many are all teriffic advice. Ultimately, if you want to be in it for the long haul, it's all about relationships. It would also be good to read some Norman Vincent Peale, like "You Can If You Think You Can." There is much to be said about the power of positive thinking. Actually, if you twice daily for 10-20 minutes meditate on and visualize yourself as that market standout you want to be, and then truly believe it is possible (or even happening) then that will increase your odds ten-fold. "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill is also a good read. exercise the Be-Do-Have principle. Be that top sales person, do the things that that person would do and then have the results they would have. For it to come to pass in the physical world, it must first come to pass in your mind.

There are two questions here. How do you become an excellent salesperson? Focus on servicing first and remember the ABC's. Always Be Closing. Express who you truly are. In advertising I'm sure you understand that it's not always important how much sense the ad makes as long as you remember the ad. It's the same in sales. You are ultimately selling you. Take risks. Put yourself out there. Go the extra mile. You'll stand out and the residuals will follow you forever.
Secondly. How do you sell more? Interact more. Get testimonials from current customers. Ask current customers for referrals. Successful people do what unsuccessful people don't do when they don't want to do it.
