I'm basically the entire new advertising section for a newspaper at my college. I'm trying to find online sponsorship for our website-basically so people can pay us to put up ads and that way we're funded. There's a couple ways you can go about this.
You can do the things like cj.com (they host a trillion ads) that aren't really targeted to your audience or you can do some legwork. You'll make more money doing legwork.
By legwork I mean figure out which advertisers would benefit from the ad space. You're a college. Start with the local businesses that cater to the college kids. Got a little mom and pop diner that does an "everyday special"? Well hook them up with the graphics skills to make a banner or make them one and I'd bet they'd kick in a few bucks. Or maybe there's a bank that all the students use the ATM. Check out their branch manager. Say hello. Tell him what you are up to. Never know, he might have the authority to hook you up with some ad revenue. If not he would certainly know who could. Check with greyhound, check with local airports, check with even the headshop.
commission junction is something that theoretically works but even in a commercial situation I didn't see that it worked enough to warrant the hassle. Your best bet is to get your best talkers and get them out there in the community. If you don't have any talkers yet its time to start recruiting. All geeks and no sales do not a website make.

As your web site will not have much traffic I would suggest that your offer advertising in your newspaper AND the web site. Make out a reasonable charging rate per column inch and include the web site linkage as a bonus.
Contact all the local places that a student is likely to go to:
pubs, cafes, coffee shops, book shops, stationery shops, clubs, bands, banks etc.
This will be very attractive to local businesses who are trying to attract student money.
Then get some leaflets made up and politely ask each business if you can leave some details with them. Go back a short while afterwards and try and close the deal.
You might also try batering with some of the companies. You can put a link in the newsletter saying. "All our paper supplied by Best Paper Shop" then give their contact details. This is sometimes cheaper for the company and better for you guys.
