How do I get my website to appear in the google listings?

The first answer is bs. You can't pay for inclusion at Google. Yahoo! offers a service like that.

The best things is a link on another website which is already indexed. Search engines will find your site naturally and by themselves this way. Make sure that you don't block search engine spiders via the robots.txt or the page meta tags.

You can also submit pages manually to the major search engines (but I don't recommend it). You can find the links here

If you don't know anybody who can link to you and you just started out, submit your site to the major directories that are recognized by the search engines. You can find a list here

I would submit your site to the directories anyway, especially Yahoo! Directory and BOTW. It's worth the money.

You pay them. It costs around 35 bucks a year to get in to the first couple of pages... If your lucky!

Google Optimization:

To appear in Google listings your site must be something that you are passionate about, and thusly is designed and written to inform first, then to convert passionate followers to customers next.

Focus on Content , then traffic, then preselling your passionate traffic, and finally monetization. What I just described is counter to what most are doing, and therefore most webmasters/owners are dying from self inflicted wounds.

Google, as well as most of the other SE (search engines) are designed, formatted, and configured to ferret out , or spider out the best written (surfer friendly-as in talking to a friend) information for surfers who are not exactly looking for you or your site or anybody elses for that matter.

They are in search of quality information first.......they'll then be easily converted customers by the site that provides it. Google sets out to find what the surfer wants, in the way of information, and if your site , with information that is written , not to sell, but to inform, does the better job....Google will find and list you over the Guys that are paying millions to be listed.

That said, please follow the following links for a breakdown of everything I just outlined. I will list the links in the order of the key problems you could have as you build your website and seek to expand its profitability.I'll then list the possible businesses that could be covered by this approach and links that you need to follow.

Lastly, optimizing for Google is synonimous with optimizing for profitability. Now, I present your WEbsite optimization Bible.

I've returned to kill some of the links because I thought I left far more than enough.

Hi,

I'm a little confused with the answers you've been given thus far, as to be honest getting listed on Google requires nothing more than effort and following SEO Best Practices.

I bought a URL on 13 May 07. I set up a simple 6 page website and submitted it to Google and MSN on 15 May 07. By 18 May 07 I could find my website on MSN and by 21 May 07 I could do the same on Google.

By 24 May 07 my site was coming up in search results. In fact on a search for Website Monetisation my site was ranked No 3 out of 118,000 results! And my ranking for certain terms are already going up. For "seo in London" my site was ranked No 11 out 715 results and a week later it's No 7!

Now SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a very very competitive area. After all I'm competing against all the other specialists who know how to get sites ranked highly, and I've managed it despite having only 6 pages, no sitemap and no inbound links.

The key I think is that I've followed SEO optimised "rules" to the letter. Each of the 6 pages are devoted to a specific Keyword Phrase and it is mentioned in the Browser Title (the blue bar), It's mentioned on the content title, a few times in the first paragraph and there are a load of internal links.

So please do not think it isn't possible unless of course you're in a ridiculously competitive area like travel or consumer electronics. The key is to choose your niche carefully and then write content on the non competitive Keyword Phrases.

Finally, whilst alot of traffic does come from Search Engines, traffic also comes from forums, blogs, articles, media interest etc etc. So start posting to those which are relevant to your website and soon you'll find you traffic and ranking growing.

Good luck. If you need further info just give me a shout.

Regards

Susan

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is to first set up a website and publish its domain name on major search directories such as Google.com, Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?... and MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these search directories to provide them with goods and services. In a sense, these search directories are a very large Internet Yellow Pages.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which, when observed and committed in designing of a website with placement of various critical metatags that can surely achieve a high search engine presence and increase Internet traffic to your website. These metatag strategies work well with published webpages at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based website, make sure to fill-in the property entries such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the Internet audience and their incoming setup. For example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages take too long to load up and therefore analog users will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users for maximum marketability, then select analog users since 80% of most resident users are still analog Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text, is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which should consist of no more than 65 characters separated by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which is defined as the loading, and submission of repetitive words into a particular metatag category. "Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported to Google's spamreport.com can result in the elimination of your website from their search directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on Yahoo.com: Begin with the search query "pizza downtown los angeles." It will bring up some 1.4 million+ websites as results. Check out where "Pizza Next Door" is ranked. It's in the Top Five! Again, Pizza Next Door's high web presence was achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant metatags according to Yahoo's publication guidelines.

Good luck!
