How do I get my website to come top on search engine results?

Many of these answers are partly right. Keyphrase research is critical. Don't go after highly competitive keyphrases unless you are a pro. MORE TEXT, less images, no frames, no flash on main pages. Alt tags for images and MORE TEXT that matches page TITLES and meta tags. GOOGLE likes TEXT and growing Web sites. Keep adding text, syndicating text, using blogs and getting others to add text in forums, etc. Add news releases regularly over time. Don't start with 1,000 pages then add nothing for six months. GET synergistic LINKS that use your keyphrases to link to you (PRWeb is great for this). USE your desired keyphrases everyplace possible. Links to you should always use the keyphrases you want in the hypertext. TEXT and LINKS!!

The more links you have to other sites, the more your site will get indexed, so that's one way.

The key words are important. No pictures on main page, descriptive wording, non repetitive. There's a lot to it. Links from other websites to you.
And many dollars. We paid $300 through yahoo. And that's just to have them look at it.
Use a good listing agency, and expect it to cost heavy.

No, you don't need to resubmit every month. Submit once and you are done... even better, get links to your site on some reputable sites and let the SEs find you.

No, you don't need to get on as many engines as possible. GYM (Google, Yahoo!, MSN) makes up nearly 90% of search traffic, and most of the others pull some are all of their results from GYM anyway.

The only way to pay the engines to get there is through their advertising, but that is different than organic results, which are much better to go after.

No, you don't need tons of links on your site to other sites. In fact, if you just add tons and tons of links to other sites, you will be more likely to look like a link farm which may actually get you banned.... which is as far from the top as you can get.

Try to get links from other sites is much better, but look for quality, not quantity.

Yes, add good, ORIGINAL content.... copying content from other sites is not only probably a violation of copyright law, but will be seen as duplicate content and serve little good in the eyes of the SEs.

Yes, write for users and let the SEs follow... don't get all wrapped up in keyword density or the keyword tags in the head, and don't spam the engines with repeated keywords... try to pull one over on the engines and you'll find yourself moving in the wrong direction.

Hire someone to help you. But, consider what value it is for you to be on the first page or in the number 1 spot... and then keep that in mind when you are pricing the services. If you are in a highly competitive market and are up against millions of results, and being there could be worth thousands of dollars, then don't expect to get results for $100 in SEO... even adding a zero to that is still low.

The basic rule is : design a site for the user, not for the search engines. Create great original content that users would love and other sites would want to link to -- and you top rankings in the search engine will follow.

Content must be compelling, accessible and unique - this is a key ingredient in getting links. Make sure people can link to specific content.

Make your pages easy to index. Think about the terms that visitors will use to search for your information and make sure your pages include those words. Provide a unique title tag and meta description tag for each page. Make your pages easy to find. Provide an HTML sitemap that contains links to pages deeper in the site. On your home page, include links to the major sections inside the site. If your site includes many pages, consider creating a browsable set of links that enables the visitor to choose a category, then see links within that category.

Make sure search engines can access the content. Ensure pages of your site can be reached without cookies, registration, session IDs, or forms. Verify that your site isn't blocked with a robots.txt file and that search engines don't receive errors when trying to access your pages. (You can check both of these things using Google's webmaster tools.)

Don't be an island. Responsibly interact with governmental and non-governmental sites to garner natural links, and -- more importantly -- mindshare. Search engine conferences are a great opportunity to learn and network, but participation on forums and blogs can also be very productive.

Study the source. Regularly review search engines' often-updated official written advice (e.g., Webmaster Guidelines, blogs, etc.).
