How do I get my website to number 1 on Google?
A competitor (much smaller than my firm) keeps a number one position on search engines. They clearly have someone who knows what they are doing. When I check so called SEO experts none can provide success stories or a portfolio of happy clients - they just want money and to host the site. Any advice?

Getting your website to be #1 on Google will depend on which keyword you want to target.

So first, find out which search keywords you want(the ones that will get you the most relevant, high conversion traffic) and then just start doing SEO for your site. This website will help you find good keywords. You just type in a keyword and it will tell you many searches per day are done for that keyword as well as list other realted keywords: http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook

Just go to http://www.google.com/webmasters and it will tell you what you need to do to get high placement ranking for you keywords. It is very time consuming though and don´t expect to get any results before 3 months for good keywords.

If an SEO service tells you they can do it in less time, they are full of it and if they can do it, its probably for really bad keywords that no one ever searches for.

Try http://www.blindmonkeymedia.com they are a fairly new company but the people that started the website have a good reputation and will actually give you a list of references complete with results. Since they are new they will probably do it at a fair price.

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Good luck!

Google 'page rankings' are the subject of much speculation and abuse (attempts).

Essentially :-
1) Lots of other LEGITIMATE sites have to 'reference' your page (if you sign up to one of the 'we can promote your page' cowboys, Google will actually DEMOTE your pages (and may even BAN them ..) .. this applies double when you pages are 'mentioned in forums' (forum 'spamming' has been attempted to get sites promoted .. it ends with a ban)

2) Your pages have to contain 'useful' content (not just lists of 'keywords' and random text 'scrapped' from other pages .. ) again, many cowboy outfits will advise you to create tens of thousands of pages containing random rubbish all pointing at your 'home page' ... Google bans all the rubbish and then 'demotes' all the pages being 'pointed at' ..

Finally, the BEST way is to have some 'unique' content that means it will come up in searches where there is very little 'competition' ... example :-

'IT Consultancy' gives about 850,000 hits (your chnaces of 'no. 1' ... approx 0)

"IT Park Consultancy" gives 10 (yes, TEN) hits (your chance of no. 1 .. about 1 in 10)

Yes i agree, but there are very few sites which offer quality SEO services with an affordable tag.You can read their client testimonials if you really want the proofs.

Search Engine Optimization is an art form, and not something that you should ever need to pay for. Trust me, its what I do! Take a look at my site - I am not looking for a few extra hits, so you dont even need to click on the index, but Google the term 'Passive income from writing' and see where The Writing Mercenary positions. This is my most recent site - it has been running for one month and is already on the first page of Google for my main keywords. Proof perhaps that I know what I am talking about.

I have started a site dedicated to Search Engine Optimization, there is far too much information to go into it here. I suggest you take a look. All the information on my site is free and all of it works with (and not fools) the Search Engines. Many SEO 'experts' fool the serach engines into ranking a site well, but their success is going to be short lived. Play the game with the Search Engines and you will be ensuring long term success. Beware of any short answers - the question you ask has an awful lot of details for any proper answer...

my site is: http://www.searchengineoptimization.today.com

It will be well worth you checking out...

Just do your own SEO. You can learn it either on internet or you can buy a book regarding SEO on amazon.

I do my own SEO for fun and have several sites ranking #1 for key words. You need to create more keyword phrase anchor backlinks than the sites above you.

Your title tag need to have your keyword phrase in it which is giving a lot of weight in Search Engine rank placement.
As your site and backlinks mature you will increase rank naturally. Try building a set number of backlinks daily by posting in forums that allow signature backlinks and blogs.

Remember that Google loves content so keep publishing

After doing on page optimization following the webmaster guidelines of yahoo , google and other search engines, try to get better quality links more and than what your competition is having .

If you don't have any time to learn or do the SEO, its better you take professional help , it will reduce errors and save your time . You know in business time is money.

But before hiring any one you must check their previous record and who they are working for.

Also SEO means continuous works, all the time you have to do more than your competition . SEO depends on niche is costly .

But you can hire experienced SEO professional from low cost area of the world .

google have Google analysis that you can get on and see exactly how your web site is performing in terms of key words used how they are finding your site, how long they are staying on your site etc etc, if you get a computer nerd that knows what they are doing and ask about this they will show you and you will be quickly on the right track.
