Well it really depends on the kind of website you are trying to market for.

If you go online right now and look up jewelry the results would be nothing less than pure insanity filled with people who are trying to make their niche in a global market.
However many of these sites are buried deep within search results by portal and advertising websites rather than legitimate business. If you target a local market and get your website a few extra visitors that way. Once the search engines see that people are going to your website and visiting more than just a single page you will gain what is known in the industry as a trusted website. Then your ranking will increase and you will be able to target more and more markets until you have good ranking in your trusted niche.

I know that you've probably tried posting and submitting ads to advertise. Sometimes the only problem with that is that your wording may not be the right kind to capture your target.
