I think you answered your own question. You can explain to them that although you would like to help them, it is not fiscally possible to lower your prices any lower, given the shape the economy is. The discount you already give the customer is the lowest possible price you can offer.

I had a client like that and they took, took and took until we (as a company) but our foot down. We thought they would leave but they knew they weren't going to get as good of service for as inexpensive as they were getting it anywhere else. If it is a customer you can afford to lose, then it makes it easier. You have to simply say in a polite way that you can't lose money doing work for him. |

I used to have a small business which directly worked with customers. If I was unable to offer them anymore discounts I would blame it in the CPA saying he was getting upset that I was going below cost or I would come up with some other creative yet believable excuse. You are in a hard spot I understand you want to help your customer so they can prosper but business always has a botton line. |

I always found that the truth is the best way to stop them.
Just tell them that you had to pay x amount for this and if you gave her yet another discount she would get it cheaper than what you paid for and that would mean you are giving it away and you just can't do that.
If she threatens to go somewhere else... smile and tell her that you are sorry but if she can get a better deal somewhere else then by all means, she needs to go shop at the other place and that you will miss her but you understand... |

I'd learn this trick from my tough job experience. The first thing that you need to do is to let them know that you understand their situation by repeating or phrasing what they say. Afterward, points out all the discounts that you took away from that product. Help them see how much is the product to other vendors and how much is the regular product.
If the person is still not satisfy, walk through with them to see if there is any vendor selling it cheaper.
The customer loves to be treated in extra special and they really appreciate it. |
