why dont you put ads on your local village notice board? Also lots of local shops usually have pin boards where you can place ads.
What about all the local pet shops- you could leave business cards on the desk.
Although it may take a while, you could print off a load of leaflets yourself and spend a weekend posting them through letter boxes- this is an excellent way to get noticed and shows people you are willing to put in the effort.
It may be worth offering deals as well just to get you started i.e book in for 4 weeks in advance and get the 5th free etc etc
also referrals are invaluable, so you could offer discounts for people that refer others to you.
I really dont think that many people would be looking on the net for a dog walker!
theres loads of extravagant things you could do, but start off with the simpe things

Guy is right in what he says. I would also suggest spending a weekend sticking leaflets through doors and posters in newsagents, vets etc.
Also, get some business cards printed up and keep some on you at all times - you never know when you'll need one!

Your best bet are local classified ads as your service is targeted to your local area. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

Depending on your location, craigslist.org is free, and works quite well. I would also answer questions on directories pertaining to dogs, and post flyers with tear cards about my service with every pet store within 10 miles of your location.
Yahoo, http://expo.live.com/default.aspx, and many other inexpensive/free directories are available to post your services.
I would also post in classified ads in all your local newspapers. Classifieds are cheap and do work well.
Dog walkers should also canvass local business owners and connect with real estate agents. Real estate agents are always looking for additional services to recommend to their clients.
Another thing you can do is purchase a jacket, plenty of white T-Shirts, baseball caps, etc with a saying like " I love my certified dog walker" along with your phone number. Give them to your friends, neighbors, parents, anyone you can convince to wear them. Then every where they go, they are a walking advertisement for your business.
Give away your service for free at local events with drawings.
Connect with your local chamber of commerce
Advertise in trade magazines classified ads: busy people love trade magazines.
Go where other dog walkers don't go.
Magnetic signs for the side of your car are great, and then gives you an excuse to drive and park your car anywhere. Again, use the Call my certified dog walker today, or whatever your tag line is, and your phone number.
You have to do everything you can to shamelessly self-promote your services... and do it with a smile! |
