Most will crawl your site on there own if you wait a while. If not just go to them and submit your site. It should be free. If they try and charge I wouldn't even worry about. Some directories charge like yahoo's for instance, but submitting your site to be crawled should be free. Learn more at http://www.Stellartraffic.com

Submitting is not necessary for the engines - they will find you (sooner if you get a few good inbond links). After you do the basics like good content and meta tags setup a site map (not the one for pople but xml for the engines.) Google and Yahoo provide instrictions for how to do this for their respective crawlers.
This is far more beneficial to your site than submissions are.

Each search engine has its own rules regarding this.
go to google and search "google webmaster tools" although complex, you can get their bot to access your site.
go to yahoo and search "yahoo webmaster tools"
you can do the same at any search engine you wish to include.
