Same way as any other habit: replace it with a different habit.
Think of your habits as a pathway, worn into the bare dirt by so many times that you've walked over it. In fact the groove is so deep now, that once you step into the trail it's very difficult to climb out of it.
So, it's best just to not go down that path at all anymore, and start walking in a new, better path.
So, what are the things (conditions, environment, situations, actions etc) that typically exist when you're being lazy?
Find a way to change those - re-arrange your office. Change your schedule. turn off the computer. close your email program. turn music on. or off. turn your desk a different direction. change the decorations.
And what are the thoughts in your head? Examine those - especially the feelings that are hidden underneath. "this job sucks. This assignment is meaningless." etc. Find out why you are looking for distraction, and search for a way to either make the work more meaningful, or find different work.
Short term fixes:
- For me, the best thing is a hard deadline where I owe something to someone. I'll blow off stuff for me, but I don't like to disappoint others. Start setting as many as you can - and ask your colleagues to hold you to them.
- Get a large clock and place it directly in your line of sight where you work. Whenever you feel laziness creeping in, look at the clock and say "ok, just 5 minutes of work then I'll goof off"
- Write down reminders / encouragement and post them where you see them. When I was working on a large writing project, I printed out the word "Write!" in a huge font size on a single sheet of paper, and hung it directly in front of my desk. It's a reminder from myself.
Good luck... it's not easy... don't punish yourself, but don't give up either. |
