well some pepole prefere to spend the extra dollars on the fancy labels , and packaging , but there are some products out here that r name brand that have yet to have a generic formulated that is equall to that product , i buy what evers cheaper , like my kids they like irish spring soap well sav on has a form of the soap thats basially the same thing but cheaper so i buy that more often than the irish spring unless its on sale , as for medications like tylenol etc the same thing i buy the cheaper one unless the name brand is on sale for t less than the geniric , the only thing i dont by generic is laundry soap , shampoo , and pin sol |

people prefer "brands" when thre is a reason.
do u buy generic medicine or branded, when there is no much price difference and when both are avilable. i bet 95% of us go for branded. becoz it is trusted. becoz we dont want to risk our lives.
when u go on a trip to africs, do u enter McDonal or some local restuarnt, when both are side by side. i bet most f those who are aquianted with Mc enters inside their golder arches. becoz u r sure of what product and what price and what quality is availabel there.
there are many example like this where u choose branded.
u prefer brands in the following cases
1) complex buying behavior fo example industrial software, or some electronic chips, u prefer microsfot or intel rather than patni or logiclogic
2) to reduce physics, and pyschological risk
3) for social acceptance. i love to put on adidas or nike than local made
4) when performance i expected. u buy garnier or knon brand of cosmtics rather than local made
but there are cases where ppl pick up local made. for example u want to buy salt, u dont mind picking up any pack as long as it is iodized. u dont mind to buy a local safety pin. brands come into existence and posses some value, when there is a reason. it doesnt mean that u cant brand salt and safety pin. u still can brand them. but the thing is u need to find out the right reason so as to position it strongly in theminds of consumer.for example Tata salt in india positioned itself as "yeh desh kaa namak" which means this country's salt. so they packed patriotism along with salt thus diffrentiated and branded. |

If you look closely at the packages you will see that most products are manufactured by the same companies or a subsidiary (sister company) For example Marlboro Cig are brand name and manufactured by Phillip Morris Co. but you have Basic and Tahoe that are generic but they are manufactured by Phillip Morris as well.They generally cost about $1.00 less, they may use a different form of tobacco or process but its the same company making money . i try to buy generic too but i've been brainwashed by corporate america not to trust a label i don't recignoise.
not only that but name brands got to be name brands by being the best. that doesn't always hold true but i do prefer my colgate to the random toothpaste at the grocery store. |

There are some things I buy generic, some brand, but mostly I stick with generic. I think the brand companies will always be in business because there are soooooo many people who will buy nothing but brand. Personally, for me, it just depends on the product. For example, I do NOT buy generic maxi pads!!! |

It really comes down to the price in terms of what consumers buy. And I think your question is backwards in a way, it should be how do generic companies stay in business with brand names. |
