All the 'sponsored links' on google are advertising. Anytime someone clicks on them the advertiser has to pay.

Heather
They charge customers a fee to have their web site appear at the top of the search as a featured site.

Search engines can make money by a variety of means.

The major ones, Google, Yahoo! MSN etc. will have sponsored advertisers who get ads posted usually at the top and the right side of the main search engine page. Advertisers will pay the search engines (SEs) everytime a user clicks through to their site from these links. This is what is known as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising.

For example, Google's advertising is called Google Adwords.
http://adwords.google.com

Some are adapting their systems nowadays to also charge for a user doing a desired action after they follow the link. Such as signing up for a mailing list or buying a product.

Some also charge for a website making a submission into their listings. Yahoo! charges commercial sites for this. Others will also claim with a paid inclusion you can get higher placements in their indexes. This is not always the case though.

See a review on search engine paid inclusions here:

Some of the minor SEs will garner some profit from banner advertising (You asked about Youtube I believe this is the way they make their money) where advertisers pay them everytime a user clicks through to their site from these banner links. Some also offer additional services like webhosting, domain registration, directory and other search engine submissions and webmaster resources and tools (to name a few).

Sites make money when users click on the ads. The ads in Google appear at the top of the web results and along the right rail of the screen.

Youtube shows banner and text ads. Display/banner advertising is paid on a CPM (cost per 1000 impressions).

Google just recently launched CPA advertising, which means an advertiser will only pay Google if the user that arrives on the site takes the desired action, like buying something or signing up for a mailing list.

In answering the question, "how Google [in particular] make(s) money," the answer is simple, they charge advertisers a fee whenever they want to become a "sponsored" advertiser. Check out those "sponsored" banners whenever you use Google search query/engine. The revenue generated therefrom by paid advertisement/banners is the source of income by which Google can set up a so-called freebie servers which hosts any number of freebie email accounts, personalized homepages to Google subscribers, many of whom, do not actually fit into the category of a "sponsored advertiser."

Good luck!
