Work cheap, get a portfolio of samples ready to show. Write about what you know and study formats in newspapers and magazines. Get some experience with retailers, products you can show some expertise...sports, fashion, gardening, home improvement, etc. Free lancing for web clients is unreliable, and everybody on the net is a writer. good luck, tis hard to make a living unless you make the right connections. |

Depends on where you are.
If you're in the US, Try talentzoo.com, creative hotlist.com and even monster.com. I've picked-up freelance gigs from most of them.
Another good place to start, assuming you have agency or other staff experience as a copywriter, is former colleagues. If they think you're any good, that is.
I recently got a call from a guy I used to work with who had a large client who, in addition to the flashy national TV, had a whole bunch of smaller projects (promo/web/FSI etc) that their agency wasn't paying enough attention to.
I did a little project with them. They loved it, and I ended-up re-writing their entire website. And they just called back with more work. The money is good, the client is national and the contact that led to it all was someone I had met 10 years ago. So search your memory bank and start networking. "Who you know" is every bit as important as they say it is.
The other angle you might try is placing a classified ad offering your services in a (very) local newspaper or, better yet, the local Chamber of Commerce website or newsletter. Hey, that's a good idea...
