d'mundus | How do websites that do not charge any money for their products or services, make money for their owners?? |
it is not through any form of advertising or ppc that i am referring to since very often this adds up to an insignificant source of revenue unless your site has a massive ammount of visitors as i understand it... can anyone tell me for example how the more successful websites that have become popular have done so as a result, i am thinking of the bebo's of this world and are valued at in the region of millions without having taken in a cent..? or am i just niave, do they receive their revenue from another source that i am unaware of.? |

Firstly - good question.
Now lets look at how the big players make money, like Google, Yahoo etc.
You spending time at their site is good enough reason for them to keep the site online cause you are using some ISP to connect and paying them for that and the more people get online the more the potential visitors to their sites. Then there is internet ads - all the banner ads that you see.
Now running a site like yahoo give you access to so much info - imagine if its your site and you know how many users from london log in everyday you know their personal details cause you are supposed to give it before you get an account now there are million things that can be done with such a data. You can target products to people with certain taste and the list can go on.
Google on the other hand has become from nothing a decade back to the mother of all information - millions of users flock their sites everyday looking for something or the other - they are making people spend more time on their sites in return ensuring all that revenue comes to them so you dont pay google anything but they earn it anyways. They have so many successful sites of their which they facilitate using Gmail - like Orkut, something for Pictures and now video so if you are checking gmail and at the same time checking some video in Youtube or google video you are spending that much time on their site in return so much revenue and then there are user you like few ads here and there and they click on those and buy something so here comes money again, imagine this will millions of users your hit rate is awesome.
Hope i was able to answers your query |

Paid advertising or sponsership is how most of those type of websites create revenue. |

some sites may get their revenue from other means, for example, if a site has a huge database of user information, they can sell that information for direct marketing activities. |

they make their money by advertising but bebo only started to advertise! and they are valued at such high prices because of the high traffic and could possibley make double for what they paid for it! bebo aint stupid they have turned down offers because they no it will be as big as my space! |

unless they are paid for hits or for advertising on the site then they simply dont make any money |

There are lots of thing but I think most of them have been covered already!
PPC - as you say, this is only useful if you have loads of visitors. Thing is, something like You Tube HAS loads of visitors - it also has loads of adverts so it has loads of PPC potential.
Affiliate links - You can sign up to affiliate programs, which is like being an agent for somebody else's product or service. People click on the link on your site and the order goes to somebody else's service but you get a commission.
E-sales - people sell e-books or articles that they have written themselves (or that others have written for a commission). These are very popular but many aren't very good value. The best ones can turn a good profit though.
Data - things like mailing lists, e-mail lists and other data from cookies can be compiled and sold for huge amounts in certain places. Everybody wants information.
You don't have to be blatant about your advertising to get it - in fact many people say that subtle is better.
But I think in relation to your question, those places that sell for a fortune without having much of a revenue stream just have huge numbers of members and/or visitors. Success on the net depends on visitors so they are worth a fortune as a result.
My own little site is tiny compared to this lot but it is growing because it delivers real information that real people want. I have no advertising on it at all because it is designed as an information site but it is still making me money. And I don't take commissions for car hire or rentals either.
Bet you can't work out how!? |

sometimes they start out not advertising to get traffic, then when their traffic is high enough they start. |

Sites like Bebo, a social network that is big in UK, Ireland and New Zealand, have investors and venture capitalists supporting them so they can afford to offer their website for free without thinking how to monetize the site. In the case of Bebo, Benchmark Capital is the lead investor and they have recently raised $15 million funding for the site http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/05/22/bebo-closes-15m-financing/ .
That's why it is hard to put a value on these sites because they have no revenues to speak of - so computation of a site's value is not a straightforward formula like 10X the revenue or something similar. Instead, they look at the reach of the site, the penetration and the "value" that it has created.
Like YouTube, these sites will make money for their owners when a buyer (in the case of YouTube, Google) buys them for some insane amount. Whether the amount that will be paid will pay off for the buyer remains to be seen (remember Excite's purchase of e-greeting card company Blue Mountain Arts for $780 million? http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/224981 ). |
