How do you get your website to the top of the search engines?
If you want at the top - it is going through the Paid Advertising models of each of the major engines. If it is at the top for the organic (non-pay per click) then it is as simple as adding pages and getting links.
SEO is a piece of cake these days compared to years ago. The problem is, the organic listings are so far down the page, their click through rate is a joke.

This is one of the most common questions related to search engines. You can basically put down the criterias for getting top rankings into 2 main section:-
a) on site optimization
- what can be done on your website by your web designer, programmer to make the website appeal to the search engines
b) off site optimization
- other SEO tactics such as link popularity, etc
