How do you improve your conversion rates?
For etailers or those who sell online, how do you improve your conversion rates? What strategies do you use to turn visitors into buyers? What conversion tool, if any, worked best for you?

Stephanie
My first and best answer is to Test, Test, Test! Change one piece of copy, design, etc, and measure the conversions against your previous copy/design. The best one is your control, and you keep testing from there. Never stop!

That being said, the best conversion tools I've found are the Hacker Safe, Better Business Bureau, Verisign and Truste logos - particularly when the Hacker Safe logo is at the top (as well as bottom) of the page. Hacker Safe seems to work the best.

Other tools I've found helpful for conversion are: live chat, strong money back guarantees, ezine (one of my personal favorites - to stay in regular contact, offer coupons, notify of sales, etc), testimonials and a toll-free number.

Beyond that, include graphics of credit cards accepted (don't forget a good privacy policy), shipping information and make sure your pages are clear and super easy to navigate. Don't make your customer guess what they have to do next to successfully place an order. You can test this on a couple of people who have never been to your site. Tell them to order item XX, and then watch them and time how long it takes them to find their item and place the order. By watching, you can see potential problems and find out where your customer may be getting sidetracked or lost.

Include an "About Us" page with photos of you and your staff (if any), your office, etc. People want to know they are buying from someone, not some nameless, faceless company. Give them the opportunity to get to know you.

Finally, don't put any competing ads, adsense or diversions on your pages. You don't want to give your customers a reason to leave!

Pertaining to just having a product, to having a great product. First you have to have a product in demand. So that means if you really wont to have success, get in front of a trend that people are going to buy, Example(bottle water, ipod,). If you wont success you have to be a thinker(outside the box). Not only knowing the product, the trend, Who you going to target, what age group, the younger generation has access to there money and their parents money, yea you can go for the big kahuna, but most people can't take rejection, so we as entrepreneurs have to be the sharpest tool in the fight of capitalism. Money is great, but has anybody thought about time freedom. What are we doing for are self's, our families and the people who love us or our we on the 40, 40, 40 plan.
(didn't mean to be so long).

Be genuine with your products, offer good shipping and return options for unsatisfied customers.

The old adage "Location, location, location" applies to any retail store whether it be in physical space or in cyberspace.

The destination of the customer traffic of your target market, that funnels interested buyers to your site through links that cross-reference you to their interests, is the most efficient and effective tool.

You can have a ton of traffic that clogs up your store and no one buys, or you can have 1% of a targeted market that seeks you out on purpose to buy what you sell.

Contrary to popular belief, the volume of traffic to your website is not the most important thing (unless it is advertiser based like Yahoo!), it is the TYPE of traffic to your website.

With the right type of traffic, conversion rates will naturally be high; with the unnecessary type of traffic, you have to spend more resources trying to convert uninterested individuals into buyers rather than dealing with those who come to your site to buy what they want.

Another effective tool:

A 1-800 number that they can call you directly and reach you immediately.

Excellent customer service and truthful money back guarantees along with scrupulously clean operations with as few glitches as possible.

Where you have offended a customer make amends immediately. This means even if Royal Mail has let you down don't blame RM deal with your customer and give something off for the inconvenience. A customer wants you to acknowledge a problem and sort it.

Attention to detail in customer care is crucial. Clean slick administration that shows up flaws is what you need to aim for.

I think all answers given before me are good, but the questions actually are -
1. what strategy to Improve conversion rates;
2. conversion tools if any worked best for you (the respondent).
There is no absolute answer to 1 but in general the most important part of all is to sell confidence in your product, and your site of course. So anything you can think of and can do to inspire confidence is crucial.
In this regard, both the answers from Ebooksel & Stephani provided are reasonably good answers.
Whereas 2 is in fact an extension of 1. You can see how the successful giant, ebay, does. But can you do that?
At the end of the day, it goes back to what most would recommend - your product, pricing strategy, hardcore guarantee, personalized company profile with address contact, good design and "human-factor" negivation from your landing page to the sales page...

Do you have a follow-up system in place on your site/salespage?

If you don't capture your visitors email addresses and names, then you can't send them new offers, or take them back to your website where you sell your product.

It's simple to do, just get an autoresponder account (at Aweber or Getresponse) and create a special sign up form, where people can leave their email address in.

In return, you give them something they will like, like a free report, or a sample of your product.

Following up on your first time visitors is the best way to increase your conversion rate. It's email marketing, and it works great!

With out getting into details that would consume all of our time, a good resource for that is a site called marketingexperiments.com
They can be a little pricey to hire, depending on the size of the campaign you have, but for an idea you can look at some of their past campaigns and see some of the tactics they used to increase conversion rates on sites for past clients.
I know of at least one strictly e-tail business that uses them and liked them so much he mentioned them in his book (which is how I found them). Mostly they focus on page layout and call to action button location etc.
Worth a look IMHO.

To turn visitors into buyers...
1.0 Capture them ( suspects) and convert them to potential prospects via a squeeze page or landing page where they will give their name and email. For them to give their particulars, you need to give something in return, like a free ebook or report.
2.0 Use autoresponder to maintain contact with those who opt-in earlier. An autoresponder is an automated software in which you can pre-load a series of emails that you can send to those who opted in.
3.0 It is said that a person needs to be exposed to at least six times before he or she buys the product. Hence autoresponders are excellent to serve this process.
4.0 Some data on conversion rate...if you do not use opt-in method, the conversion rate is 1%. For those who have opted-in, the rate is 20%. Both figures are approximate.
5.0 Another method to increase your conversion rate...sell a very lowly price item for your product. Then upsell them later with other products that cost more.By now, they know you and relationships have been built ( trust, service etc).

To explore or understand autoresponders, you can sign up a free or limited features from getresponse at http://www.hyperlink.to/freegetresponse.
they have video tutorials which you can access when you sign up for the free service.

I think the most important thing that turn visitores to buyers, is to show the visitores real success of the products, and show them some interviewes of real people. and the next point is to show different aspects of the product, which are it's power points. It should be strong enough to be belived by visitores. Good Luck!

Nancy P
A decent picture, a good description and price. If not overused, sales and specials/coupon code can be helpful.

Not sure if that's what you were looking for, but...

good luck!

Peter F
The best conversions are achieved by having a great product, properly described and illustrated with a clear picture. Do not insult your prospects intelligence by special offers and cut price deals or OTT sales copy.

When the customer buys have them fill their personal details in your autoresponder form before downloading and when they reach the 'Thank-you' page offer a follow-up product as a back order.
