Another way to patent your idea is to make a copy of it and mail it to yourself in a sealed envelop and DO NOT OPEN IT, keep it for your records and go with the normal filing procedures with the patent office. When you mail it to yourself since it has a FEDERAL Post Mark / date: time:stamp, that also serves as a record that it was your Idea 1st. |

A design patent is much easier to get, but it's also much narrower in scope than a utility patent for example. You need to to a patent search (you can do it yourself with freepatentsonline.com or other site, or you can pay for a search), then you need to file a patent application that really only has specific views of your design such as dorsal, ventral, side, and perspective views. Pay the examination fees and the maintenance fees and, assuming your design is unique, you'll have a design patent. |

Find a Patent Attorney who can substanciate your inventive ideas. They do a Patent Search, and then submit the information the the Office of Patent and Trademarks in Gaithersburg MD.

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
