By charging $25 for job postings in Chicago, NYC, LA, DC, Boston, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle, and San Diego and $75 for job listings in San Francisco and by assessing a $10 fee for brokered apartment listings in New York City.
All other listings in those markets are free, as are all listings in the more than 100 other markets the company serves in the U.S. and overseas.

The company is owned by several shareholders - only four or five originally. The stock is valued at over a billion dollars - some say as high as 5 billion. They can sell their shares when they quit.
One person did this last year - sold his shares to the founder of eBay - just to really tick off his ex-pals.
He reportedly took in a cool $250 million for his 20% stake. This is all from memory - a quick search will show the details.
eBay is now suing the board for mismanagement. That's one reason they now charge for stuff that used to be free.
You'll see many more changes as the Borg / eBay assimilate the rest of the folks over there.
