S | How does the music in a store influence customer buying? |
|

Mood.
Shoppers who are comfortable will stay longer; customers who feel rushed or nervous are more likely to leave without buying.
The right music can set a mood and pace for shoppers.
In-store music is NOT "foreground" music. The goal is rarely to "keep someone in the store to listen to this cool song," but instead to serve as background.
The "wrong" music, of course, can also drive customers away. (Worst case scenario: many years ago, I was shopping in a store, and nearly ready to buy something. The store was piping a local radio station over its intercom, and an ad for a competing store played, convincing me to leave and buy from the other store. It's not music, but you can see the problem here.)
Music can also serve to "filter" customers, by making certain customers feel more comfortable and other customers less comfortable. A store that plays Neil Diamond and Beatles music is likely to be more attractive to middle-aged patrons, while a store that plays "hip-hop" or "urban dance" music is likely to attract younger shoppers (and possibly drive away older shoppers). |

Music playing in a store can influence customer buying positively or negatively. The prime example is music stores themselves. Personally, when I'm looking for CD's, if music which is new to me is something I like, I will ask who it is and sometimes buy it right there and then. However, if music playing is just a tad too raucous for me, I will try to tune it out, and continue browsing. If I knew what I wanted when I went in the store, sometimes I will buy it and leave. Sometimes I will just leave. The music playing, however, may be enjoyable to other customers (the type which is raucous to me) and keep those people in the store longer, and maybe generate more sales.
In other stores, clothing, Wallmart, etc., Sometimes it's pleasing and will keep me shopping or at least looking; other times, It will chase me away. |

I know that if the music is too loud, i.e.: club levels, I'm going to get out of that store fast, even if they're playing something I like. It's positively painful and difficult to concentrate. Maybe the store management thinks you won't notice if they rip you off if they're blasting you with music. Oh, and get a good system to play the stuff on. Death to distortion! |

It reinforces music people have heard and may influence buying. Therefore quality and choice are important. Radio stations used to be accused of getting songs to nu 1 in the pop charts by over playing. |
