How is it possible to sell an idea to a clothing company like american eagle outfitters?

I was in purchasing/procurement for a large corporation. So I know how it works. I was not in the retail clothing industry.

But here's how I think that a buyer for American Eagle would build a line of products for sale in their many stores.

First of all you need to know that a buyer is in an extremely high pressure job. If he buys 1000's of items which ultimately do not sell. He is stuck with a huge revenue loss, which could cost him his job.

I very much doubt that they would buy an idea. What they are looking for around the world is an established clothing manufacturer (say in Tiawan) who has creative designers and huge production capability. If they like the product, they will email their American Eagle logo and the manufacturer will sew it into every item during the mfg process.

Size by quantity are set, delivery dates are contracted. Shipments are made with specific arrival dates (to ensure that they catch Spring Break, Xmas etc.)

So ideas are not really the way they work. However if your idea was outstanding, a buyer could take it and send it over to Tiawan for production.

What you could do is contact American Eagle or any other company like them. Ask specificaly for the contact information for the buyer/purchasing agent who would handle your clothing item.

They will be split into different areas of reponsibilities such as (I'm being creative here) bluejeans, sports wear, teen wear, mens wear, ladies wear, shoes etc.

Stress that you are an "American" designer with ideas and skills to create fashions for American youth.

Their 2007 Spring line would benefit substantially from the excitement and vigor that your "American" ideas and creativity could bring to the American Eagle 2007 lineup.

Hope that helps

You don't sell your idea, you need to sell yourself. Why not work for them and take your idea to the next level.

Yesss! Target offers great opportunities for this kind of thing. I co-founded Mossimo.

The first thing you would have to do is copyright the clothing design and/or logo. The second thing you could do then is trademark the logo. Copyrighting protects your design. Trademarking protects the symbol that identifies your brand-name so to speak.

you can probably take pictures of your designs and e-mail them to americaneagleoutfitters.com(also ask if you can create a meeting with the people who are head of the company).

*wearing the clothing
*put signs up at signs at schools, clubs, public bathrooms, resturaunt, malls, public activity centers like "Y.M.C.A." or A.M.F. bowling centers, telephone poles, public telephone
*asking resturaunts to use coasters with your logo
*billboards

Do you have a portfolio of your ideas?? I would first find out where the cooporate office is located. Then, I would e-mail them, and if possible scan some of your ideas to them. It couldn't hurt. Good Luck.

smart_stuff101
u go 2 their website and click on the tab that says suggestions and then u can email them your stuff

Have more then one idea give one to them free by bogying their anual kick off meeting.

Sweet Thang!!
Prepare a very detailed professional presentation to the correct person (design, marketing, or licensing director); set up a meeting, and good luck.

If that does not work well, do not give up, move on to next manufacture.

beautidul_sex
send them e-mail

malroymck
You don't as they are too big, and they would have heaps of people sending them ideas. The best way is to start with a small company that are just starting out. By doing that it is one way of getting recognized. However you must do your homework first.

Jammy
Well if I were you, I would walk up to the manager and show him my idea!

contact the company from their website. ask for contact information for the design department. then, contact the design department about presenting your ideas.

be sure that you have sketches, samples, etc. and why your designs are valuable to them.

you could also try contacting human resources from their website. i'm sure they look for new designers and portfolios all the time.

good luck!!

Here's how most independent ideas get to companies. Through a reputable third party agent. No reputable company takes on ideas independently because of potential for lawsuits. It's like trying to sell a script to a movie studio. They won't even open the package. They'll send it right back unopened. Get an agent in the clothing industry to present your idea for you. It stands a much better chance of being heard/listened to. Good luck.

Why don't you go to American Eagle Outfitters and ask them or get on their website? Can't beat that...

Allie
i don't think they accept people's designs because american eagle oufitters already has their own designer who made the store and everything. i'm pretty sure that't just the store that one designer designs all the clothes.

You dont. They dont take ideas from everybody off the street. Try to go sell a mmovie idea to a movie studio, that isnt going to happen either.

J C
you shouldn't. you go for it on your own. have somebody model it for you at a college fashoin show and then get in on other fashion shows. you never know who is in the audience. many ideas get stolen and you never get anywhere, but if you are sold on going this route the others have mentioned target which is a good idea or even walmart, not pun intended, or sears and jc pennys. good luck!

**dancingqueen17**
i think....

u can e-mail them if they have an address or u can call them and ask how u can sell an idea to them. i never did it so i'm not exactly sure how.

You'll get much better results by trying to sell them a completed, or nearly completed product, instead of just an idea. The less work that they have to do on it, the better for them. There's also less chance that they will steal it form you. (Don't think that they won't try to.)

Develop your idea as far along as you can, ideally to the point of having a prototype. Make sure to document it too, or even get a patent or copywright. If it can go straight to the assembly lines instead of through a long product development phase, then it's more valuable to them.

Remember, there's no shortage of great ideas in the world, the shortage is of folks who can make them happen.

Get some SUPER hott modles and show them what your talking about. Visual aide will really sell.

Type up your idea. Then mail it to yourself. This way you have sealed proof that your idea is your idea.

Make it very professinal and to the point, becuase these people are very busy.

Contact their Advertising or Martketing Department. Look for that information on their website or contact the Better Business Bureau.

The best thing to look for is a fax number or a phone number to find out what is the most direct way to contact the Marketing Department.

Be prepared to wait for a month to five months.
