These days, its sometimes difficult to cypher how much people earn. Sometimes, people may earn more than we can imagine, but decide not to spend/show they have money thus decide to lead a very unmaterialistic & down-to-earth lifestyle. Maybe they do not feel the need... (I don't know much about the guy, but Bob Geldof seems to spring to mind, who may be a prime example of this....).
Others may earn minimum wage, however rely on sources (such as credit cards/loans) to achieve that 'quick fix'...
I guess it depends on peoples goals in life and the balance of 'living to work' and 'working to live'... |

You've got to have some fun in life. Personally, I save for my holidays but a lot of people either get loans or put them on their credit cards - absolute madness in my view. |

well if you are asking if people are poor instead of pour then i can answer your question. Holiday spending is subjective just because the numbers show that millions are spent i believe a lot of this spending is deficit spending, my family not being extremely wealthy would save most of the year and really go all out for Xmas, maybe for going a vacation for extra money, or using credit cards or layaway as a way to spread payments over time so not to destroy a fragile budget. 2 types of people in the world those with a plan and those without one, and it seems that the ones with a plan always gets more for less. If holiday money is thought about before the holidays approach than your point is moot, 50 dollars a month set aside will leave you 600 dollars for holiday spending, easier to take 50 a month than 600 all at once from a low budget, 50 dollars a month is less than 2 dollars a day, is there something you buy daily that you could eliminate that can help you save this money, Have a plan and stick to it, and your family's holidays will be great and memorable!!! |

There are many reasons. The pressure that businesses put on consumers with all the ads showing happy givers and receipients and the resulting guilt that people feel if they don't do the same. (Keeping up with the Jones)
Guilt from parents, who think that buying things for their kids will solve thier problems and make up for the parental shortcomings during the year.
Childrens expectations, and the guilt that parents feel by not providing every wand and desire thier kids have.
Greed of the financial institutions through the availability of "easy credit".
All fueled by the "want it now, gotta have it now" instant gratification society we've become. |

Tradition plays a strong role in the holiday spending pattern. I think many would agree that the season is over commercialized and folks would fair better not running up a lot of debt. Our economy depends upon the important holiday retail season. So, in that respect spending is very important for the retail industry. The individual debt level in our nation is very high. A big source of spending has been folks consuming the equity on their homes. This is a terrible financial determination. In fact, our nation is relying on foreign investors to purchase our bonds. |

You would have to define what do you consider poor first. Travelling is much cheaper these days and it's easy to get the loan for holidays, so it's much more affordable to everybody. |
