Hi Mary,
I recommend that you do start mailing out your flyer (put something on there about referrals receiving discounts) and put FREE demonstration on there. FREE always gets people's attention because people are cheap, they like free.
Go to local businesses and see if they have card holsters that they keep for businesses and inquire about leaving your business card there. Tack your flyer up in Wal-Mart.
About craigslist, if you posted your ad in your city, try posting it in your state's craigslist, some people only browse the states, not the individual cities.
Also, use the paper and post in the wanted section. Something like
****Wanted****
Cleaning Jobs
Too tired? Let me help
Professional cleaning
-Contact Info-
And try asking some friends of yours about people they might possibly know. Check with like daycare centers and offices about leaving them flyers, because usually offices look for people to clean for them and so do daycares.
Your message should be friendly and professional, because home cleaning as well as office cleaning (I assume they are usually cleaned at night) needs to be able to trust their hirees. Oh.. And maybe check with a hotel or two, they usually may be hiring a cleaning service instead of maids. Or if you have more than one employee, then maybe you could find an inn, or hotel that's looking for an entire staff of cleaning employees.
Good luck |

Well Mary I had my own cleaning business, it really depends on what you are looking in like residential or commercial? I cleaned vacant apartments what I did was went to the apartments and asked for the maintenance supervisor and gave the receptionist the card and usually I would get to talk to him, you want to have some quotes already made up!! Residential go to certain neighborhoods and door tag your flyer's.. Leave flyer's on the community boards at grocery stores and other places.. You could try to mail them but most places pitch junk mail... |

Hi, Mary!
If you'll post your ad in the optimal area that will be seen by the most people, you'll get some business from Craigslist.com.
You can create and hang colorful flyers in stores that allow it, and check with the post office to do a bulk mailing to your area.
Best wishes! |

If your are putting an ad on Craigslist, tag it under many different categories so no matter what people are looking at they will see your ad. You should also consider putting your ad in the classifieds of your local newspaper |

Caiglist is one of those places you may or may not get business. Try posting you fliers at area business and such. |

Building a business takes time and usually no one marketing tool such as Craig-list will get you all the business you would like. Referrals from customers can usually be a big boost, especially if they appreciate your good work. Try to get the information out about your service to the type of customers you would like to work for the area you want to work at, and the customers that would benefit from your services. Keep talking about your business to everyone you meet and eventually you will find if this business is going to "fly" for you. |

you have to think like a consumer
a long and boring ad is pointless
you should figure 6 lines max
pitch your business
catch phrase
information
and contact
not necessarily in this order but improvise as you see fit
craigs list is awsome, i have so many people telling me they heard about my program through the website that i have considered elliminating all static sighnage |

you should post your ad on craigslist more frequently - like once a week. If you want to write companies, send them a coupon. |

most people on craigslist are looking for work. Your services cost money, so therefore, less people are likely to respond...why don't you post what you wrote in the add on here, you might need to revise your wording. |

I've had good luck with craigslist. And hey, its free so what does it hurt to keep posting? Try using a different more popular category. |

I'm surprised. I have used Craig's List very successfully for selling things and for hiring new employees. The flyers are a good start. You can put a few out around your neighborhood and then word of mouth is your next best bet. If you do a good job for a fair price, your customers will tell their friends, etc. People may be afraid to hire an unknow person to come into their homes so you may want to get licensed and bonded to give people more confidence that you are not a crook or ax murderer. Good luck and God Bless You. |

I don't know if people look for services on Craigslist its more for buying and selling things. Maybe try the local paper or see if someone will interview you about your new business and post a story about it the local advertiser. |
