There isn't any specific number, in terms of ranking this is a low factor.
I have a number of sites in the top 5 in google, some at number 1, which are just 1 or 2 pages, but they are highly relevant to the area.
You need to get good quality content, and this ranks much higher than lots of poor quality content. It needs to be relevant to your subject area, and contain a good spread of keywords.
Just let you website develop naturally, give it the number of pages it needs to be a good website, rather than trying to put a certain number of pages up for the search engines. You`ll get much better rankings this way.

I know sites with just a couple of pages that are excellent.
On the other hand, there are lots with a dozen pages that are absolute rubbish.
I think it's the content that must be able to attract and hold people's attention.
These are the ones that win out in the end.

I do not have a very good answer to that but I do not think that the number of pages count on the web site. I hope it depends on the contents of your web site and as we know contents of web sites differ from one web site to another. But it is important to have a web site which is somehow flexible which someone can navigate more easily, which is a user freindly web site.

Google likes fresh and good quality content. it doesnt matter how many pages you have.
In order to rank good in a certain page, keyword density is important. I normally use around 5 - 7 % .
