It can really vary. You might be able to find one ready made at sites like:

or you can contract a graphic artist which would be significantly more expensive (generally $ 600-1200 USD).

really depends. you can do one of three things:
1) if its just a project you are doing, you can find free stock images online, and edit them with any software such as paint or photoshop. This will be virtually free (discounting electricity bills, and the cost of coffee while you're at it the whole night!)
2) If you are starting up your own business, and need some level of professionalism while keeping your costs, your best bet is to engage a good freelance designer. You can quote him your exact budget and see if he's willing to take your offer, while being able to see his previous design as well as talk to him about his idea of what he has for you. Typically this can cost from below $100 for a simple one, to $500 or even $1000 for a professional one with documentation and how to apply your logos on different platforms.
3) If you are established, or am doing a major branding, i would advise going with a professional branding agency or creative house. They will be able to look at your brand closely, as well as your target audience and competitiors, to create a logo that SAYS SOMETHING. Of course you will get all the bells and whistles of a full brand guide and more, maybe even a pretty executive on your account ;).
Be prepared to pay for this though, upwards of $2000. But as they say, pay peanuts and you'd get monkeys.

couple things, you can pay a graphic designer between 55 and 75/hr or try going to monster templates and buying one and jazzing it up yourself. or vista print, you can design your own logo there with their pieces and then have all your stuff printed there. only problem is it isnt that unique and if you ever want a website or something else, you will be re-inventing the wheel.
