How much does it typically cost to advertise on a billboard?
I know it probably varies by location... I live in a rural, tourist area in the mountains of North Carolina. The only reason I'm asking on here is b/c I'm stuck at my desk until 5:30 and can't get out to drive around and see available billboards. Thanks!
Additional Details
Driving around will help b/c I can get the phone number off the available billboards and call the number... DUH!!!

It all depends, every area is different, and high traffic (in demand) locations are going to be far more expensive than others, as are size.

The vinyl itself and creation of the billboard will probably run you close to $2K alone, then if you are lucky, you may be looking at $2K a month, but probably safer estimate to double that on up to $10K+... but again, like any other form of real estate, it's all about location, location, location. However, your outdoor advertiser may be able to offer alternatives as well that meets your needs and budget.

IT MIGHT BE BETTER to find a good piece of land and either buy the land, or rent it, and out up your own billboard! If you live in a rural area, I have seen them available in rural central new york for a few hundred a month. It is all based on traffic of course, so it will be best if you drive around and try to locate some bargains. Even at a few hundred a month, imagine how much land you might buy for a few hundred a month along a rural roadside. PLUS, you sell one side of the billboard to a marketing firm then they pay for your land.

You'd have to contact the company who owns or has advertising rights to post on the billboards. These sites have contact information for rentable billboards in North Carolina:

Dear DUH,
You are so right - location i.e. cars per day/week is critical. Other factors will be length of lease, number of possible changes, lighting, movement.
Be sure to check the maintenance agreement for wind/rain/snow damage.

I would check with local advertisers in your area. I've paid up to 1500 per month.

Jeeves
couple grand

Driving around won't help. Go to the web sites of some billboard companies, (Carter, Clear Channel, etc.) and check their rates.

Or, check the yellow pages in your town for Outdoor Advertising and give them a call.
