It can be anywhere from $10 to $100,000+ depending on:
- the keywords you set
- the number of keywords you have
- the geographical location you want to target
For example, if you bid "small business" targeting the USA, expect to pay anywhere from $2.50-$10 per click. But if you bid "small business" targeting Asia, then you can pay anywhere from $0.50-$5.00
If you bid "how to start a business in your pajamas working from home" then you may be able to get it for $0.20 per click

Whoa! You need to think about the strategy differently.
It's often a mistake to try to be at the very top. To be successful with any paid source of advertising, you need to use these for measurement:
> cost per sale
> visitor value
> lifetime customer value
So if you have a widget that sells for $20, and your profit is $10 after the cost of the widget and overhead, you can, in theory, spend up to $10/widget on advertising and marketing while still breaking even.
Since adwords is a game of percentages, you need to work backwards like this
Say your website 'converts' to sales at 5% (not bad!)
This means it requires 20 visitors to make a sale.
If you spend $0.50 per visitor on marketing, you break even.
...but each customer may have a long-term value (e.g. even if you lose money on a sale, you make a profit within a year, etc.)
This means that you have the following options available to you:
1. raise the price of the widget (competition pushes back)
2. improve the conversion of your site to more than 5%
3. spend less per visitor (SEO/SEM work)
4. increase lifetime value of customer (relationship)
So... what you'll find is that VERY OFTEN the top position in Google is NOT the most profitable one.
90%+ of businesses don't go through this BASIC calculation and it blows my mind. They just spend spend spend and then give up when it doesn't "work."

Hi,
There are many ways to market a small business on the web. You can buy banner ads, text links, or use PPC. However, the best way is to get listed in a bunch of portals. Portals and directories are like phone books, and they often provide a lot of traffic because they tend to rank high on Google.
