I've been working as a graphic designer for a company for almost two years. Now, I'm starting to freelance. I've been contacted about a project but I don't know how much to charge. The details are:
30 17x10.5 spreads for a magazine (for print and web use)
Design and Layout Only - Photos, Graphics and Text Provided
the business is a brand new green living style magazine
this is the second issue
can lead to future work
I know that I don't want to charge per hour. I definitely want to charge a flat rate. What do you think is a fair, flat-rate for a project such as this?

I don't think you know a lot about creative design if you think I'd charge minimum wage!
Graphic design per-hour fees range from $45 - 100 per hour. However, I am not looking to charge per hour.
Anyone with a real answer please stand up. |

Hello, I am a graphics designer also and I have done several jobs along this line. I would charge $10 per sheet seeing as to how you are only doing the layout. If you had to do the whole page from scratch, I would charge more like $50 per sheet. Hope this helps.
P.S. I would also consider some sort of total flat rate such as $150 or something like that. |

I am from Australia so I can only go by the rates here. I think it is fair to charge a flat rate. I would estimate how long a page would take me to design. If it is using a magazine template then it is easier, however the first sample pages of the template will take the longest. I would allow 2 days to come up with a 2 good design magazine templates (12 hours) and run these past them for fine tuning before proceeding. It may take 3 or 4 attempts to get to the final sample layouts (another 8 hours). After this it should be easy to put the other pages together if you use the base template (1/2 hour each for me, but you may take longer/less time) In total this should be around 35 hours. I usually charge $35 - $40 Australian dollars an hour for large jobs. This would make it Australian $1225.00 for the whole job. Draft this up in a contract before you start and list what they will get for their money. The other thing you need to make clear is that any authors (changes) they make on top of what you have quoted will be charged at $35.00 per hour. It is really important to include this, as clients often think that they can make loads of changes and they are included in your quote. I have had clients make 6 or so drafts and spent hours more on the job than I have charged for in the past. Say that they are allowed 2 drafts with changes and then you will have to start charging them.
When I do smaller jobs I charge more per hour. Also let them know that you are giving them a discount because it is a large volume of work. |

Well I can kinda agree with "Uncle" on the part that this job isn't complicated and is not Graphic Design so you may not be able to use the $45-100 per hour fee. I mean most companies come up with magazine templates with varieties to make this job simply quick to do and change styles of course. Templates don't replace a custom job though but in this case magazines they do have limitations and must be a quick source of information.
Come up with your rate though, because it based on how good your service is and no one knows how good you are. This is a service industry and I recommend you use the hourly rate. |

Flat rate would be difficult to calculate since some projects would take longer then others. which would mean you would be giving a discount to the people who take more of your time and charging more to the people who give you easy work |

You dont want to charge per hour? Isnt this job a per hour type of job? If you dont want to charge per hour, then I dont know if anybody out there can help you because your job is a per hour type of job. Then you might as well set your own rates. But to be honest, alot of the per hour rates protects the workers because some things are too easy to do. So, nobody would do it because at a couple of dollars per hour, workers would make nothing because it probably takes like 20 minutes to do "most" of the work that people hire them to do. So thats why they have a per hour rate. And you dont want to charge per hour? Well, set whatever rate you want. (I guess; since you dont want us to tell you to charge a per hour rate) |
