Why do you want to place an ad PERMANENTLY on a site? Or if this is your site, why do you want ads to be placed on your site PERMANENTLY?
For one, how sure are you that the site is going to be around 10-25 years from now? The word "permanently" is just too scary to use on the Internet, given how quickly things change on the Net
There are different considerations when setting a price for ad placement:
- How big is the site's traffic? A site that attracts millions of users a month can charge higher rates than a site that attracts hundreds per month.
- How is the branding of the site? A site that has already established a strong brand in its field can charge way more than a no-name site that has never been mentioned in the press or media
- How desirable is the site's target market? A site that attracts venture capitalists and CEOs can charge significantly higher than a site attracting teenagers, even though its traffic may only be less than 10% what the teenager site reaches
- What is the ad payment going to be? Is it CPM or cost per impression? Flat rate (whether monthly or annually?) Is it CPC or cost per click?
- Where is the ad going to be placed? An ad above the fold can charge higher than an ad below the fold
- What is the ad format that is going to be used? A leaderboard or large rectangle can charge higher rate than a 125x125 button
- How extensive is the coverage of the ad on the site? An ad that will be placed in all of the ad formats of the site -- e.g. it will be the only ad shown in the banner, rectangle, skyscraper, text ad -- can be charged higher than an ad that will utilize only 1 ad format
There are too many unknowns and variables to consider before you can put a price tag on an ad. I can tell you to charge $5 CPM but if your site for example attracts the high income high spender crowd, then tht $5 CPM is wayyyy too low for your audience. |

it depends on the site. Most sites wouldnt offer perm ads. If you only receive 10k hits a year, the price will be low around $200-500 per year where if you get 10k per week, the cost could be 200 per month. It really depends on the site and market. Best way is to look at sites in your market and see what they charge. If there are no sites in your market then you decide. Really you decide what your site is worth and the clients decide whether they want to pay that or not. Other ways to pay for advertising is CPA CPI |

depends on how big the ad was. |

Depending on how long your site has been active. If you have a permanent website, it is yours free and clear, and you don't make payments on it, then you can charge whatever you feel is appropriate. You can buy a permanent website for about 150 dollars. So if your selling ads on your site for permanant then you should also charge 150 dollars. It's permanant and they don't have to do it again. Just remember those that pay you for permanant advertising, you have to keep their ad up permanantly. If you take it off they can sue you.
Good Luck! |

What is "permanent"? What are you committing to?
For example, what if you decide not to renew your domain some day? What if you want to sell your site?
Are you committing to this advertiser exclusively, or can you add other advertisers? Where will the ad appear (which pages, in what positions)?
Does the advertiser have some other expectations, such as "you will regularly update your site," or "you will continue to show the page/ad to 100,000 visitors per month" ??
What happens if you conclude, at some point, that the advertiser is acting unethically or illegally? Does the advertiser expect that "you will not make disparaging comments about the advertiser," or "you will not disclose truthful information about the advertiser's ongoing criminal fraud" ??
I would never agree to accept an ad "permanently." In the past, I have generally limited committments to no more than 3 months, so that every 90 days we could evaluate the situation, and either the advertiser or I could choose to end the relationship, or re-negotiate.
Of course, the question still remains: what to charge? It all depends on the web site (including subject, authority/reputation, traffic, competing advertising opportunities) and on the advertiser.
I've sold "exclusive advertising" (usually a banner and text link) on sites for as little as $100 per quarter.
In 1999, I maintained a web site with about 100,000 unique monthly visitors, and collected more than $10,000 per month for advertising. That works out to $100 per 1,000 visitors ($100 CPM).
Today, that's unrealistic -- far fewer than 1% of web sites can justify rates higher than $20 per 1,000 adviews ($20 CPM), and most sites earn less than $1 CPM). |
