Dennie | How should I go about finding a model to pose for product photography ? |
I am a freelance web designer in New York city and I need to find a model to photograph and showcase products for a new client's project. I normally use stock photography but this client requests exclusive images and also the use of their products for their site.
Could you please share your advice and any directory where I can find a suitable model ? Also, I'd appreciate a general idea of what I should offer in terms of payment and what I should expect from the model. The products that the model will showcase are accessories so I wonder who is responsible for her make-up and wardrobe, etc...

The questions that you have indicate that you should have an experienced photographer as well. There are years that go into learning the art and it is much more than just knowing how to operate a camera. Lighting and composition are major factors, as is knowing how to direct the model. There are subtle things about the wardrobe, pose and background that will effect how the product is seen. It would not be advisable to shoot it yourself.
Generally models are available starting from $50 an hour. Experience, use of the images and exposure will effect it. You will need to tell the model the details of what you want and talk with her about the rate. A less experienced model will likely be a lower rate, but it will probably take longer to get your shots. Lingerie or nudity will usually raise the price. A project for a major company will probably cost a little more, unless the model feels that it will help her career. Travel distance may make a difference. Mostly just be honest and fair with her.
An experienced model will know what poses look good for her and are often good at picking up on what the photographer wants. Many of them can do makeup, though they usually prefer to have a makeup artists. They usually have a collection of wardrobe items, but their wardrobe may not be what you are looking for. Most of them will not be able to design lighting, background, or other image elements. Their view of the total image is looking at the camera imagining what the end image will look like.
Good images are a team effort between model and photographer, so don't under estimate the importance of either.

small shoot, low budget - go ask your favoite friends or prettiest girls you know. Offer them what you can afford. Money depends on how long it takes, etc. Let them deal with makeup and wardrobe, pick someone who dresses like you want the model to look. Goth, high fashion, MILF, young teen, etc...
big shoot, go to a model agency (yellow pages), hire pro photographer who will bring or suggest makeup people, or outsource the whole thing to an ad agency. Your client should pick or at least review wardrobe choices, since their products are accessories.
wannabe models will work free if they can use pics in their portfolio.
In NYC, surely you know some people? If not, you really can just go up to women on the street if client will be happy with you and your camera phone. Otherwise, pay for a pro who has lighting and experience. |

Put an ad in the New York Times paper, look for people on myspace, and facebook as your search look for people in the state of New York. But I will be honest money will definitely get people to start calling you so make sure you say in your ad that you will pay them. Also don't forget to put your number in the ad. |

Working as a free lancer you should not have a problem at all.. Just get any of your friends who looks like a model and just get a good make up artiste and get her glammed up and Click as much as you can.....This way you also get to be the Go father of the Model you Click...

Models: You can hire a professional model but it will be too costly. As around maybe a pretty friend can do a favor for you. If not, ask a friend if they know somebody who can do it. Be very open to the model about your budget and ask them their usual talent fee. It would be easier though if you know someone.
Wardrobe: I think there are shops where you can rent wardrobes. You can rent from them and if would be more cost effective.
Make-up: Hire a professional make up artist. They usually give the price on there own. You can haggle though.
Just a piece of advice: When you do photo shot, make sure you have a concept in mind. What would you want to portray in your images? What is the motif of the AD you are making? How would you make the AD interesting? Take this in to consideration when you choose your model, wardrobe and make-up artist. |
