So I guess this is a SEO(search engine optimisation) question. When someone searches a web site on a search engine how can bring them closer to being #1 besides meta tags, links..

Advertising can bring in traffic, so can social websites, syndicated articles, blogging and press releases.
As part of any SEO campaign, you want to be well rounded, so a good bit of work on all the fronts is advised rather than just one aspect.
Good copy on your site is also a bonus it is believed that the better the quality of the content the higher the PageRank of the page. So writing original well written and keyword rich content can help.

There are about 106 factors Google looks at to rank your site. Meta tags are dead. Well, except for the description tag and keyword tag. Links are good, if you get the right ones. You have much to learn. :)
