I run a couple of private sites and manage over 100 sites for a large multinational. Over the years I have picked up a standard set of actions that need to be done. These fall into the following categories:
1. Create good content for the site (often forgotten!)
2. Optimise the site for search engines
3. Submit the site to search engines
4. Get relevant sites to link to your site
5. Update the site on a regular basis
6. Repeat steps 1, 4 and 5 over and over again

update your question with the url to the web site. it would be picked by yahoo and Google.
to check if your pages are "known" to the search engine just go to the search field and put
site:nameofdomain.com
like this example

Before you submit your site to the search engines you must ensure that you optimize your site. You see, getting listed and being found once you are listed are two different goals all together. Obviously you want to be found by as many people as possible, so you must ensure that your site is listed at the top of search engine listings.
As you are aware, the number of sites that are listed on the search engines is astronomical, so you must optimize your site in a way that your chances for getting listed at the top will increase. There is a method for doing this and is quite sophisticated and involved; however, there are some programs that provide you with essentially all the tools that you will need to achieve a high search engine ranking for your site. The program that I use is very good
and I think is a great tool. Below I have listed some resources that might help you. God bless you!

I use engineseeker. It is a monthly service $4.95/mo i think. That submits your website to hundreds of search engines. As your site gets listed in more directories it will move higher in search engines like Google, the more sites that link to it. i think its working because I've been getting a lot more hits on my website and a lot more people saying they found my site on Google.

Google Adwords. You just put a credit card or something and it should directly take you there. Will take about 4-8 weeks to see traffic coming but its better than nothing...
